I dont like being ripped off at the auto shop

I cant always have my boyfriend come with me so I have to go to like 4 or 5 different auto places to compare prices. They said I need front brake pads and a caliper repair. My car was sounding like it was dragging loud. The prices I got for total including labor were $430, $239 and $140. Ya see? 🙄 😡 Next time Im gonna ask to buy the parts myself and just pay for labor

That’s actually not a bad cost
Most repair shops won’t allow you to bring your own parts
I know the one I use won’t.
The shop I use only uses OEM replacement parts
@SW-User aaah yes OEM hea a keeper

The correct price is closed to $239. For $430 they charge for labor + parts+ markup on parts.
As for the $140, I'd be worried.

{@chelseamonroe3 ] not being funny here but it makes you wonder if some are just coming it and think it is a woman they can try and pull the wool over your eyes . you did thee right thing you know to shop around and this proves really that some are really nothing more than con artists

Original manufacturer parts can be exorbitant.Sometimes aftermarket parts are made by the same supplier as the original parts.
After the job is done ask for the old parts back and also ask what brand parts are to be fitted, how much do they cost? What is the hourly labour rate? They may charge for longer than the job will take.Dashcams have caught out a few auto shops too.

Did all shops you got quotes from, call for the same scope of work?
Like what Emortal said. I’d be hesitant of the $140 quote
While pads aren’t all that pricey, a caliper can be
chelseamonroe3 · 26-30, F
@SW-User yes I told them what I needed one of them looked it up on his phone. For the brakes alone one of them said $109 labor included in it

@chelseamonroe3 have you looked at online reviews for each of the shops?
Do you know anyone that uses any of these shops?
chelseamonroe3 · 26-30, F
@SW-User No I didnt really have much time for that My car was misbehaving and i was told it was very dangerous to drive around. I had to go with closest places.

isn't it some bullshit? they tried to charge me $90 for an oil change one time...
TexChik · F
@DeluxedEdition here an oil change is about $50-60 bucks, but does include a free tire rotation.
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@TexChik that's not bad at all but pep boys rotates for free. do you guys have that there? sorry if this is a stupid question
TexChik · F
@DeluxedEdition I hear their advertisements. I drive a big 4x4 truck that takes 7 quarts of oil. I go to NTB , I know the man that runs that store .

auto repair shops are notorious for ripping people off but also you kind of get what you pay for. once had a cheap mechanic accidentally cut my dads gasline when working on another part and then did a shoddy patchwork repair on the gasline without telling him. he found out and was furious
Darkskiescoming · 51-55, M
I do it all myself and will as long as I am able.
MarineBob · 56-60, M
Let him do it .its simple
chelseamonroe3 · 26-30, F
@MarineBob for a fair price yes
