Have You Ever Traveled By Cargo Ship?

Many of the cargo ships offer passenger bookings. I’ve been watching videos and it’s interesting. I guess it depends on which cargo company you book but some have good sized cabins and private bathrooms, some not so much. Meals are included but it varies.

No, just traditional cruises ships, sailboats and MY passages for me. Cargo ships are interesting to view, but the amenities would be lacking and the food might not be what I would eat.

@Stereoguy Very true, the lack of passenger stabilization systems might be an issue. Hey, that's a good diet plan!

@toddr13 I’d be bringing ginger candy (crystallized ginger) with me. I bring it when I fly and it’s also good in case of food poisoning.

Never as I get sea sick.

@Nimbus did you ever try ginger for it?
Nimbus · M
@cherokeepatti Nope, it was many years ago but I use it now :)

One of my Uncles goes from England to the West Indies and back again on Geest Banana boats and loves it 🙂
That could take weeks to get to your destination depending on where you're going and I have to imagine it wouldn't be the most fun of rides. I'll stick to flying I think.

@MrBlueGuy There are people who actually enjoy it. Some are posting videos of their trips.

It would be a much more interesting trip than a fantastic plastic cruise

@SW-User sometimes I watch a video and wish I’d gotten a job on one of the cargo ships when I was young to see how I would like working on one. You go off for months at a time, I don’t know if you have to rent something in between jobs or go back home to your parents or what. Sometimes you’re away for 9 months at a time. Seems good not to have to drive back & forth to work. But you don’t really get a day off either, the work is continuous.

@cherokeepatti i don't know how a woman would fare amongst the gorillas though

@SW-User everyone has a job to do and there are women working on those cargo ships

Not so far.

Have you?

Never done it but know about it and thought about doing the GreatLakes and St.Lawerence seaway
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@MethDozer what kind of ships do they have going through there?
MethDozer · M
@cherokeepatti Any ship that is designated "Seawaymax".
740 feet in length, 78 feet wide, and have a draft of 26.51 feet and a height above the waterline of 116 feet maximum can travel the entire seaway

Lakers bigger than that cannot fit in the locks and cannot pass Massena NY. Saltiness from the ocean bigger than Seawaymax cannot come much farther than Montreal on the Seaway.
