I'll have tomato sauce. I'll have tomato soup. I'll put hot sauce on. I'll have fresh tomatoes, diced or sliced tomatoes, I'll have salsa on my food, etc But I will not put ketchup on my food. I think ketchup tastes disgusting.
I don't like ketchup. It interferes with the taste of the food. What's the point of eating "the food" if you are going to cover it up with ketchup? Some spices to bring out the flavour of the food... sure. But, no to ketchup. NO. And, that's final.

Tomatoes have a similar history. Both are of both north and south American continents.

I actually make my own Omurice and use leftover fried rice (usually chicken or veggie fried rice), forego the sauces often used with Omurice and go with a lightly scrambled egg (2 or 3 of them) as a covering for the rice, the undercooked side of the eggs down. I think your idea of salsa, maybe a medium to hot salsa, would be an excellent choice.
