A lot of the reason why we now have new security-oriented laws is due to the gov't being afraid of We the People. However, since corporations are now considered 'persons' and the gov't can’t limit a corporation’s independent political donations (2010 "Citizens United vs FEC" dramatically expanding corporate rights), there has been a noticeable shift in who our representatives preferably serve. Namely, corporations through their corporate lobbyists. No longer do our elected representatives primarily serve We the People. Their primary efforts now go to serving the corporate class who make laws in their favor.
