We had Major natural disaster where I live. The red cross had a nationwide telethon to raise money to help us. Thing is we never saw a dime of that money. We either had to suck it up or apply for a FEMA loan.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@curiosi Red Cross is a big-time scammer. They do give a bit of money to people to replace essentials in the form of a gift card
curiosi · 61-69, F
@cherokeepatti Yep and they sure know how to pull at heart strings. Was told they showed pics of the damage etc. They pulled in a huge amount.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@curiosi believe they have been involved in some nefarious things which I won’t go into details here but it’s international in scope. They’ll never get another dime from me ever again.

Most billionaires don't give a s**t about anyone but themselves.
BlueVeins · 22-25
Charities are generally gonna communicate with billionaires and their organizations unilaterally since they're higher-value targets.
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
Maybe but if legitimate need exist and I can help, perhaps I should give out of my meager wages. I definitely don't need a lot of what I have.

Some billionaires have a fully functional trust/fund.

@SW-User they don’t actually have those billions in fluid money. It will be buildings, factories, equipment etc. and unless they can suddenly find someone willing to buy billions of their net worth in one go and who somehow has that money, then they can’t.

The government, however, does have that fluid money in the form of taxation. The US just spent four trillion dollars of tax money, which is enough to feed the entire planet, instead they spent it on systems to tax even more money because apparently 4 trillion isn’t enough, taking more than that is a priority over feeding people.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
So many charities are pure scams.
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
@cherokeepatti United Way is
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@MrBrownstone Many, many more including cancer and children’s charities.
pianoplayingsteve · 31-35, M
Billionaires do donate to a lot of charities, I used to donate, but I feel in my situation volunteering to a community based charity is better
LordShadowfire · 46-50
People don't talk about the fact that in the 1950s, the primary reason it was possible to run an entire household based on a single income was the fact that the richest people in America were paying income taxes proportionate to their relative income. Now, they pay almost nothing, and nobody else can afford to live.
LordShadowfire · 46-50
@MrBrownstone Among others. But trickle down economics works. 😆
pianoplayingsteve · 31-35, M
@LordShadowfire what you described doesn’t stop you from investing and building. My parents never earned much but spent what they did have on music lessons for me and now I run a music teaching company. I also spent just a couple of £’s in investments, used the profits to invest more, used the profit from that to make more. Now I’m throwing around hundreds into different things from that initial couple of pound investment. Who is stopping you from doing the same?
LordShadowfire · 46-50
@pianoplayingsteve I use American currency. 😆

Sorry, I take your point. I just have this thing where I can't resist a good joke.
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
That’s why I don’t donate
