can someone own someone else?

tonight,ive beeen having a discussion with someone who has really pissed me off. so i would like to hopefully set the record straight. this guy is married. and we were talking about relationships. and he said he doesnt let his wife do this and the other. i asked him why not? he said because he owns her. i told him that no one owns any one. they are their own person. but he still insists that because she is his wife,she is his and he owns her.i dont agree with this in any way. and i just wondered if anyone else had a view on this? as far as i am concerned,no one owns anyone. he told me that all couples own each other. i asked him if hes parents owned each other? he said yes.
