Oh yes, there are many places in the British Isles that were first settled in Mediaeval times if not earlier, by the Romans.
I live not very far from Dorset's County-town, Dorchester. That is mainly of Roman origin ("chester" is the etymological clue) but only about a mile or two from the huge Maiden Castle earthworks, built in the Iron Age to defend what must have been a sizeable community.
Often, a good guide to the age of a place is the age of its church, as that would not have been built without a reasonably-large, stable congregation within easy walking-distance.
My village, now nearly the suburb of a moderately-sized town, might not be as old as 13C, but its local church dates from the 15C.

There are signs Bronze Age settlement in the area and it was important as a trading centre for both the Romans and Vikings. 🙂

@TJNewton Haven't encountered him on my previous dozen visits so hopefully my luck will hold. I'll be careful on that walk alongside the Cam to Grantchester though. There's a tearoom there that used to attract the likes of Virginia Wolff so there must be something sinister. Are you sure its the ears he bites off?

No real idea. I’m sure my town always existed as long as the rest of Britain has but the oldest known building in my town now is a pub that was built in 1473 and it wasn’t until the Victorian times that the town became popular for the tradition to sit on the beach. It’s known as a Victorian seaside town.
