Unscrewing the outlet cover should be fine. Just don’t apply much pressure, because you don’t want the head of the screwdriver to slip into the outlet. Those things usually attach/unattach easily, so it shouldn’t take much. Also, don’t over tighten when you reattach, because those plates can crack pretty easily. I’d also place masking tape over the face of the outlet once it’s removed to avoid getting any paint on it.

If all you are doing is taking of the cover, you'll be fine. The plug itself is attached underneath the cover. If you want to mess with that you'll have to cut power to the plug by finding the breaker that controls it and shutting the power off there.

No that's a ground fault interrupter. There's not much room around the sides of it. It's just those two little short screws.
