Had a beautiful day today at the African Renaissance Monument. It is a remarkable work of art.

The African Renaissance Monument is a grand bronze structure standing on the second Mamelles hill just outside of Dakar, Senegal. Standing at a height of 52 meters and crafted from copper, the monument depicts a muscular male figure emerging from one of the craters of Mamelles hills. The bare-chested man cradles a child in his left arm while embracing a woman with his right. It is accessed by a large staircase of 198 steps.

The African Renaissance Statue was ordered to be built by former Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade in the early 2000s, and it was inaugurated in 2010. The statue was constructed by a team of engineers and craftsmen from North Korea.

According to President Wade, “ The man, woman and their child will face the sun, symbolizing the opening of the continent to the rest of the world. It is a driving force and attraction in the greatness, stability and sustainability of Africa."

@bijouxbroussard Indeed, I am. It's a lovely city. The only problem is I don't speak Wolof. I can speak very little French. Despite French being the official language, it's not commonly spoken here. I would love to learn wolof.
