Yes...you have to ask the head for permission and if refused you will be fined if you go ahead.
As you will be for not asking...

Have a word with the headteacher and explain the circumstances, why you think the absence is necessary, and what you will do to mitigate the time lost in school. The fine is for unauthorised absences. There is always room for negotiation, but you do need to communicate your intentions 💖

Wow, that’s a crazy law, and punishment!

It’s to try to stop kids being out of school in term time,, parents take them out because holiday prices increase by £££s in school holidays . I can see why with weeks of school holidays but holiday firms should be stopped from increasing prices so much for the school holiday weeks,,, yep i took my kids out to save money

Sounds reasonable.

I've never heard of it hear. You would be counted as absent and if you had too many absences you could get in trouble.

Once upon a time being needed for farm labor counted as an excused absence. I tried that once, my dad was taking some horses out of state and I wanted to ride along. It didn't work. Meanwhile a classmate managed to go on an out of state hunting trip and got it excused. His father happened to be the principle at the Jr high school and I think he played football as well. It seems if you played football you could get away with just about anything.

I pulled my kids out of school when my oldest was about to start the 8th grade and we home schooled. My son once went with a friend to a concert in another state on a Saturday night. We were supposed to get him back Sunday but it took us a week. Not a problem.

@sunsporter1649 Maybe I’ll go into the school calling them all Marxists and see how that goes for me 😂
ineedadrink · 51-55, M
Yeah, there's bound to be a learning curve with all this. (See what I did there).

this is still one of the best countries in the world to live, all those complainers can just sod off somewhere else, perhaps to the deserts of africa or the middle east, see how they like that.

@ravenhill
sod off somewhere else, perhaps to the deserts of africa or the middle east
I mean that is the second in line to the uk
They're just fining you because when your kid doesn't go in they don't get paid for that day.
Raffiki · 22-25, F
@Spoiledbrat really?! I thought it was just a way to stop people doing it.
It is here. @Raffiki

What a shithole of a country
Carissimi · 70-79, F
That’s insane, and out of order.
TheWildEcho · 56-60, M
Kids will learn more on holiday than they would from a boring old teacher in class
chrisCA · M
In Canada, many parents have done that.
I have never heard of such a thing.
Same @chrisCA

If you notify the school head in advance, and they agree to the vacation during term time, then you don't risk any action. They may not agree to it though and that may depend on how many days you intend to take.
Raffiki · 22-25, F
@SW-User I’m going to try to clear it next week. I didn’t know this was a thing until now 😭 Hoping it will be OK because my kid just started and has already done this grade before we moved here.
That's communist.
Madgirl · 26-30, F
its not allowed at all to do so here... school duty for kids... you have to come up with a very specific reason to do so.. and "i booked the hotel a week earlier" is not gonna cut it... you will get fined or worse
Ceinwyn · 26-30, F
You could just do it in one of the many school holidays, not mess with their education and not get fined.
Carissimi · 70-79, F
Often bookings and school holidays don’t match up. @Ceinwyn
Raffiki · 22-25, F
@Ceinwyn It was booked before we moved here, she wasn’t meant to be in school until September. But either way, she’ll learn more from it than sitting in a classroom.
