I have a theory.....
=People are attracted to (and collect) what they think (right or wrong) they were deprived of as children.
IE: I was always the tallest of my many siblings. Therefore, I always got the new clothes at the beginning of each school year and whenever I outgrew those, I got more new clothes ... and my brothers got the hand-me-downs that I outgrew. Today, I could pretty much care less about clothes and my brothers are all "clothes horses."
OTOH, I always got the hand-me-down toys... rarely a new toy or a bicycle. And today.... I own a company that makes (YEP, you guessed it) ... toys. My spouse often jokes that all I do all day is "play with toys and people pay you to do that."
Speaking of spouses... my wife grew up in a little village on one of the many remote islands in the Philippines. If the typhoons wiped out the rice crop.... the large family went hungry. Today.... you should see our pantry. It resembles a small grocery store. I joke with her that she "collects food."

@Threepio I think you were right..it’s the pain when we were young and helpless .. As a kid I’ve join little girls clique after church activities and all of us gather… we keep exchanging letter sets to one another..the designs you haven’t got are the ones you are going to trade in..only if the other wants to trade with you. They have older sisters that aren’t that old that can support their hobby. Since all of my sibs are boys and the youngest of them are 11 years older than me and my parents can’t relate to any fancy paper collection. I only have one Aunt that looks after me, dresses me up and does my hair not even suitable with my face shape.. I act shabby in beautiful dress because there’s not enough lady like in the house I can aspire with…both of my mom, including my aunt looks frowning when gets dressed, it wasn’t pleasing. I grew up wearing pretty stuff uncomfortable..I was left out in the group but in school I was the envy since I have cute stuff papers and wearing pretty clothes…And until I was in high school everyone’s obsessed with being neat including any stuff you use or wear..that has given me an impact as until now still have the desire of these stings. Trying to be fancy from head to toe.
I understand your wife. She had that suffering and when time had given her chance..she doesn’t want to suffer the same thing again. I think it is a good coping mechanism. I guess your wife will get mad if you waste food? Isn’t it? :)

@Sepia
OH YEAH...!
But the funny thing is... When you buy so much food.... some of the fresh stuff (like milk or veggies) is bound to spoil at some point. And I refuse to take a chance on food poisoning... So I tend to go through the bread, veggies, refrigerator and so forth every couple of days and toss out whatever I deem questionable (past its time...).
And I never go to the grocery store hungry.... so I RARELY buy on impulse. OTOH...my wife buys a lot on impulse.

@Sepia when covid started gas went to 175 a gallon.. i bought 150 gallons . that was three 50 gallon drums full.. and used it for over a year.. i do not need to drive much.. being retired. just to the store and paying bills. i am waiting till it drops below 3 bucks now and will do the same.. now i got a 500 gallon fuel tank in my back yard waiting.
every little bit helps

i have so many journals and planners, stickers, washi tape. i used to hoard makeup, but now i feel like i dont really need to get more.

@AliceinWonderland I collect them too but not too much Washi.. I think I’m
old for it. Which brand of planners and journals are your favorite?
With make ups, anything goes with expiry dates so I do dump when it’s time.

Coins...they don't take up a lot of space.
@FloorGenAdm Wise answer... though they are heavy...

My recent fascination is with collecting man-sized statues of historical figures. Or course i don't have that kind of money yet so it's just something i dream of. So that's my answer.
And also having a library of books. It seems like a dream lol because I don't think life will ever allow me to sit quietly and read so many books.

Frankly, I don't like to accumulate things, I like empty, wide spaces, I tend to be minimalist, I love to throw away or give away things that I no longer use, it doesn't do me any good to have many things, I like to dispossess, forget about many material things.
I would probably hoard card making supplies - but, at the same time, I would also make cards to give and sell as well... so it's not like I'll just sit on my huge mound of supplies, doing nothing with it.
Sepia · 36-40, F
Ahh this one, card making stuff, this hobby is always relaxing that you just have to sit down and relaxed figuring out what it needs look like and how you want it. @HootyTheNightOwl

I know , It gives me so much pleasure to give things to people who need them . My rule is if I don’t use it or wear for a year ,it’s gone . 😊 @Sepia

If I had the space and it was all to myself, I'd have a copy of every game and game book I've ever owned.
Sepia · 36-40, F
@DunningKruger Gone are the days.. games are so manual but such joy!
assemblingaknob · 26-30, F
if i could i would throw away all the things i haven't used in 5 years. if only i had the guts to rebel against my mother like that.
I used to collect comics 👀
Now it’s nothing. I throw away Everything

Snap :(
i think clothes are my worst hoarding habit, but moving and having no closet space only a clothing rack has helped me reduce my clothes but even then, i still have way too many.
Sepia · 36-40, F
@deathfairy same here… even hard to let go
it is really hard to let go. because they are small parts of you. when i was really cleaning out and reducing my clothes to move, i was sobbing the entire time because i felt like i was letting go of an old version of myself and it was really hard. @Sepia
Sepia · 36-40, F
@deathfairy oh my gosh.. I did the same thing as you
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
