Of course it's irrational to define yourself by the political entity under whose territorial claims you were born or whatever.

If your parents were from elsewhere would it be 'patriotic' to support anything [i]their[/i] country of origin did ?

Patriotism is a useful tool to wave in times of hardship especially if your country is on a war footing.
