People shouldn't go out of their way to offend but some people take offense when none was intended. So, the answer is, I dunno! 🤷‍♀️
Depends upon the situation.

At the funeral for someone close to the potential offendee: don't provoke (I go out of my way to NOT offend).

I think my default setting is just that: to not go out of my way to offend people.

However, if someone else is being offensive and just won't quit...no holds barred.

Negotiating between those is part of the social mechanics which one attempts to continually hone.

Offence is subjective.

What offends me may not offend you.

I personally don't care if others find me offensive.

As much as in ...do to others what you would have them do to you...I guess
