Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.

The kid deserves it. Though I agree with your assessment of hard work, there's no way someone can do this without talent. Yes, he wasn't born with it, but he may have better coordination and other qualities that makes him a distinguished pencil artist. Just like some people have the talent for academics. You must have observed at school that some kids excel really well in studies even though they work as much as or less than other kids. Some people have a specific way to deal with things. Their minds work in different manner. They make it look really easy. Call it talent, or skill. Being an amateur artist myself, I can say the kid definitely has talent.

I mean look at the bigger version of it. It looks like a photograph, not a sketch.
