Semantics, maybe

Was thinking about the term "assault rifle."

Is there another kind of rifle? Aren't they all intended to assault or defend against assault?

Hmm. Didn't they originally have a knife at the front to literally stab with? Maybe that's where the term originates?

Strictly speaking. I’m certainly no expert, but when I hear the term I think of the ones that have the capacity for spraying a roomful of people, and not my grandmother’s rifle that she used to pop cans off a fence.
