Does a gratitude journal help you?

Lostpoet · M Best Comment
Practically every entry is like this one and yes I'm aware of the spelling and poor handwriting I usually only have my lap to write on.

@Lostpoet I love that part about "write on emotional evocative topics that are of importance to you" .

I agree with that 100%.

If we don't speak or write about, or do meaningful things ....then life becomes meaningless.

We become the rat, spinning in the same circles.

I mean.....I look here and scroll the posts....and my mind screams at the repetition and banality of what some users posts, meaningless drivel used to take up time, rather than use it.
Some lack so much original thought, they steal ideas from other chatsites, and regurgitate them here .

We NEED to change, to learn , to adapt - or we stagnate.

I dig that you philosophise. I sometimes wonder if its a dying art 😁

Thing with journals are they remind me of university. We had to keep journalling for 3 years and because I was so burned out it felt like a chore.
I like it feeling natural and unregimented. Just dotting down thoughts on my phone whenever I have them or on this whiteboard I have in my room.
I do think it helps but only if people do it with a goal or intention in mind.

Journaling for 3 years would cause you to become sick of it. I do think journaling the positive things in your life can help you feel better when you feel like doing it. @NickiHijab

@NickiHijab there was a woman who started a gratitude journal decades ago and she ended up publishing it as a book because she had so many things written in it. Was very interesting to read.

@SW-User pretty much. It wasn't gratitude journalling though. It was reflective. Gratitude journalling is less heavy and more focused on shifting perspective
It has. An appreciation journal helps me more.
For me, having gratitude connects me to something I've been through. It's looking back. Appreciation opens me to all that's available in the future. It's looking forward.

@PhoenixPhail Thats really good, I’m happy you found it helpful.
@SW-User Thanks. 😊

Gratitude journals help so much. They can help people develop more positive emotions, can help with depression, anxiety and stress, make you see that your life isn’t half as bad as you think it is. I think they also make you more appreciative of yourself
SW-User
That’s great, I think I need to start writing one. @Jenny1234
As in SW? Yes, it let's me exhale my stresses, that are only materialistic to strangers, that can choose to hear me or disagree. I don't mind it at all.
SW-User
Not sw, the pen and paper kind. 😅 Although, I’m happy SW is helping you. @checkoutanytime
@SW-User I never put pen to paper, it's to permanent.
SW-User
Yes, well mine isn't only gratitude 😁 but also talk about what I'm grateful for and vent too
SW-User
@SW-User id feel kinda pressured with one that was gratitude only..
SW-User
That can be true. You need to let the negative feelings out. @SW-User
SW-User
@SW-User or maybe have that and also a regular one..
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
Yes it can, helpful to remind you of what you have and not take it for granted.
SW-User
That’s true because we tend to forget the good things we have in life. @cherokeepatti
Not really. Journaling the good AND bad helps me.
SW-User
I think journaling the bad can help you let out toxic anger and frustration. It’s all good. @Pinkstarburst
@SW-User It’s healthy to confront the negatives. It’s the only way to truly let them go.
SW-User
Yes, I agree. Burying them inside just causes you more harm. @Pinkstarburst

Is it a journal where you record things you are grateful for?
SW-User
Im not the journaling type.
WhateverWorks · 36-40
Yes, but it works better if you write in it every few days rather than daily habitually. When it becomes robotic the benefits start to wear off.
tenente · 100+, M
i keep a journal. it's really helpful to look at past entries to analyze myself
SW-User
That’s great, it would be interesting looking back at what you wrote a decade ago. @tenente

@SW-User right, that question: What would your 30 yo self tell your 20 yo self, etc... same answer every time, i acted too much on jealousy and anger when i should have been focused on building relationships
SW-User
You can learn a lot about yourself and what mistakes you made in the past. Many people are like that; they focus on the wrong things. We keep learning all throughout life. Everyone makes mistakes but it’s good to learn from those mistakes and improve. @tenente
