I Want to Get Into Medical School

That was me almost 55 years ago! I am now retired from mediclpractice. I have watched Medicine change dramatically over the nearly 50 years since I graduated from medical school. I have interviewed college students for admission then watched what happened to them through the next 4 years. I am amazed at how uninformed about Medicine the applicants are. They rarely have a clue what systems exist in US or elsewhere fordelivery of care.

We are turning out students well-prepared to pass examinations I wish they were as well prepared for their careers!

Law school is much the same way . They teach case law and precedents , but not how to think . I was accepted to Med school , wanted to be an ophthalmologist ... but then a wise old judge seduced me to the dark side . I always wondered what that medical life would have been like. I still have my head filled with all that Biology and chemistry

Some of my best friends are attorneys, so it doesn't have to be the dark side. I work with many who donate lots of time to things I enjoy, environment, provision of care to underprivileged, etc.

You you mentione ophthalmology. D many of "my students have toldme, but their second semester, that they are looking for the ROADE to happening, radiology, anesthesia, dermatology or emergency Medicine, all " quality of life" specialties!

@samueltyler2: I was fascinated with the complexity of the eye and the use of lasers to correct the shape of the lense . Had I gone to medschool
And gotten that residency ...I would have only been out a few years ... and never have met my husband . I'm thankful for that old judge . 😊

The medical field has changed a lot. Nowadays, it 's mission and vision is geared to specialties and sub-specs. Most hospitals are no longer accepting generalists like it used to. It's now highly competitive. In order to be accepted in big hospitals, one has to take many specialty board exams in hierarchy, from associate to diplomate to fellow. Otherwise, if one doesn't have the credentials, he is stuck in primary rural medical facilities.

You need to work as hard as possible to achieve what you want. How far are you in your education? That is somewhat of a trick question, I learn something ne every day!

Then you have a long way to go. I was not a great student until the last 2 years in college, when I started taking school seriously! You canturn it around if you reaslly would like to.
