I Had a Near Death Experience
I guess I'll never know for sure unless I happen to meet Jesus when I'm officially dead. When I was somewhere between 4-6 my mother took me to what is typically known as Dummers Beach in Weld, Maine. I kind of grew up going there every summer. It's a pretty safe lake to bring little kids especially because you can literally walk a good 30-50 yards without getting any higher than your waist or thighs. In the early 2000s swimming lessons were often given there. My brother who is now 16 had taken swimming lessons there as early as 1 or 2 years old.
Well, one day I was wading in like two feet of water and for some reason I slipped, I think. I only remember the fact that I felt very dizzy. My eyes were open underwater and I was laying on my back, but I suddenly felt like I was teetering on the brink of unconsciousness. It was very hard for me to stay awake.
Sometimes I wonder if drowning isn't necessarily what they make it out to be. I've heard it's a terrifying way to die, but from what I remember I felt totally fine. I felt like I was slipping into the deepest sleep I'd ever experienced. The greatest sense of peace I can remember as a kid.
Right before I fell asleep I opened my eyes for some reason, and through the blurry view underwater to the surface I saw my mother's form. She must have been able to see me too because she grabbed me up and brought me to the surface and as I broke the surface her face totally came into view and I remember her yelling my name once.
I coughed a bit and got on my feet and then everything was fine after that. I think I asked my mother about that experience probably almost a decade later and she said she couldn't believe I remembered it. As I explained it to her she took a minute to think about it. She said SHE had almost forgotten about it.
I guess it couldn't be a dream.
