I'll Tell You My Opinion

I have been seeing all over the news about this 17 yr old young man who could get 30 days for allegedly hitting his teacher in the eye with a paper airplane, and I see a lot of people complaining and saying how stupid that is, among other things.

The young man it appears is being charged with a third-degree assault and battery and was transported to a juvenile detention facility. He is out now on a $1,087.50 bond and due in court on Valentines Day.

Now if he the young man is in fact, guilty of what he is accused, notice I said if this is what I think.

The teacher had recently had eye surgery.........now when your teacher goes missing for any amount of time you know where your teacher is at, there is no possibility that he did not know his teacher had eye surgery.

The teacher claims he had problems with the young man in the past.

The young man just happened to hit the teacher in the same eye that he had surgery in.

The teacher's eye was red...........and the teacher pressed charges.

My opinion, I don't feel a bit sorry for the kid, it seems to me like he knew what he was doing and he did it anyway wanting to inflict pain on a teacher he doesn't like.

Would I have pressed charges against a student for hitting me in the eye with a paper airplane if I were the teacher? That's a different story, but with the same breath, I don't blame him for doing so.

We were all kids once, and did stupid things. That doesn't stop them from being stupid things. We all have only two eyes. Ask anyone who has lost one how that seriously impairs their depth perception and ability to do many things well. The eye is the only part of us that modern medicine cannot replace with a working artificial version. The seriousness of this dictates that the kid answer for his actions.

As kids, we all do stupid things, and we learn from them, that's how we grow into responsible productive adults. (or that is how I was raised anyway) Eyes are precious things, perhaps one of the most precious things we as human beings have, as you said they can't be replaced to working order artificially. I agree the kid should very well answer for his actions, and hopefully, learn from his mistake.

I havnt heard about this. One of my first question would be with regards to intent. Distance and proxity are factors like, was this kid 50 feet from the teacher of 5 feet? Kinda hart to hit a small target like an eye from 50 feet. A lot easier for 5 feet. Without knowing any details I'm stuck on intent to do harm to that eye. Hard for me to judge without full details.

My feelings exactly.

I too suspect it would be deliberate, and I think I'd press charges, but request some leniency in the sentence. He'd be held accountable, and I'd be showing no ill will. Assuming there are no Manifestation Determination issues here,
