I Have a Question

Back in summer 2012, I had a trip to America and got a chance of visiting Las Vegas. One time at my hotel, I was wandering very near the casino areas. A few minutes later, I noticed two men in their security guard suits walk towards me, I instantly knew why they came. "Hey sweetie! You really shouldn't be playing around here. How about you join your family over there ok?", he said as he pointed his finger at an Asian family god knows who they were. I was like "Uhhhhhhhhhhhh.....ok!" then I slowly and hesitantly made my way to the Asian family until I was sure the two men were gone.

Were the security guards being racist or just completely prejudiced?

No i don't think so. Las vegas is full of tourist. Maybe they thought you wandered away from the family. Besides Casinos have rules about underage people. hanging out in them.
bhatjc · 46-50, M
@Alex1610: Yeah :) and it makes you think. you are getting back at the casino.
SW-User
@bhatjc: Probably, but only for the food lol

@Alex1610: Yep ;)

I think neither. Unless there were many Asian families around, they were simply making an assumption. It may have been incorrect, but it was not illogical. If you were a Caucasian girl, in an Asian hotel, and wandered into a place you shouldn't be, and there was just one Caucasian family in view, it would be natural for the security guards to assume you were together.

@Alex1610: and that's a good plan. What if the kids don't understand your language?

I know, this is a totally different scenario, but I am trying to make a point. Just assuming that you and the only Asian family in view were together isn't racist or prejudiced. It's just human nature to just to conclusions when faced with limited facts.

@Serenitree: I knew what you meant before. I stopped questioning if it was racist a while ago now lol
Serenitree · F
@Alex1610: good. I'm glad. It's got to be hurtful if you think people have ill intent.

I assume they seen your race and that near by family's race and put two and two together by no mean was racist just a mistake
BlueRain · F
@Alex1610: were there other Asian families? Then that's crazy.
SW-User
@TwistedVine: It was a crowded place, and there were many Asians. Say, if there were more than one Asian family there, I'd be interested in knowing where the security guards would tell me to go
BlueRain · F
Pick out of those I guess
BlueRain · F
Sounds like they were looking out for you. Race makes no difference.
SW-User
I know they were but don't you think they assumed too soon?
testbutton · 51-55, M
how old were you then? i think you have to be 18 in a casino.... and why were you sneaking off from your real family?
testbutton · 51-55, M
well, you will have a parachute so you only need a half good airplane..
SW-User
One more thing, I wouldn't be able to find a parachute either
testbutton · 51-55, M
well that part is kind of important. maybe you can find a nice mattress factory to land on.... ;)
Livingwell · 61-69, M
They thought you were underage and made an assumption.
SW-User
Well that's not the point. The point is they didn't know if the other family was mine or not
Livingwell · 61-69, M
Understood. They assumed. But the primary point is they were doing their job to remove you from the area quickly. It wasn't a predjuice thing at all. Just poor judgement.
They weren't necessarily racist or being prejudiced, but I think they were profiling. I think they wanted you to be where THEY wanted you to be so THEY would feel comfortable. Their wanting you to be with "your family" was for their comfort and sense of security, not yours.
SW-User
You know they could just tell me to stay away from the casino. And if you said so, then they weren't being so serious in doing their job
Yes, they could have said that, but they might have thought giving you an order like that wouldn't have been taken as kind or courteous. They're probably instructed to be "nice" to people. The casino's customers are their bread and butter. However, their "Hey sweetie," and "You shouldn't be playing around here," feels like they were treating you like an irresponsible child. That feels a bit condescending to me.
