I Have a Question

When watching American TV and movies, I often see house numbers such as 1711 or 3242 or whatever. Are the streets actually that long? Are there thousands of houses on one street? Or does the number break down into something else?
This is probably a question that makes me sound naive but living in the middle of England my entire life, things are obviously different over here than in other countries but I've always just been curious. :)

The numbers are often determined by a central point it that particular city. So 1711 may be the 17th block from that central point and 3242 the 32nd block. Also they can be east and west so there could be two 3242s. For the same road if it is a long one

don't believe any of these folks.
your hunch is correct. in america, we have streets so long that house numbers run into the millions. in LA and NYC, billions, even.

The last 2 numbers indicate the houses on that block. Each block one hundred higher. So 1324 would be 12 blocks or about 1 mile from 124.

I think they like to start each new block on a new thousand...

I think it's hundred... not thousands
