I Have a Question

How do I make this work? i got tired of being out of work and accepted a job in a calling center, the problem is i start at 6am and buses dont run that early. should i just take cabs in the morning or stay somewhere within walking distance or what? any suggestions? its rare for me to get a job offer so i didnt want to let that stand in the way and i dont drive and i cant bike it, cant keep my balance on one, i do have a scooter but its not going to work if its snowing or raining
Can you strike a deal with someone else who lives relatively close by, works there and drives to work? I would think paying him or her something to offset the cost of time and gasoline and would be less expensive than cab fare. It's also a good opportunity to make a friend.
@pearllederman: Post a notice on the bulletin board. If there's no bulletin board, you could write out a few words on a post-it note and wear it around the office, or at least display it somewhere around your work space so people can see it as they pass by.

@sophrai: id have to wait till im working there to do it
@pearllederman: Taking initiative and showing responsibility is going to be seen as a plus with any company that hires you. You want to be seen as a commodity, not a burden.

If there's absolutely no way at all for you to get to work, consider calling the office and talking with your boss or direct supervisor about your transportation issues. Start some communication about this. Let them know you don't drive, and that you're needing consistent and reliable transportation to and from work, if just for now. Let them know you're working on an independent and reliable means of getting there. Ask them if they would be willing to put out a memo to their staff and employees, asking if there's anyone who lives in your vicinity, who would be willing to supply the transportation you need. Let them know you would be glad to compensate your driver. Show them you really want to be there when you're supposed to (if you really do). Companies WANT reliable, dependable employees. Show them that's who you are. I think they'll do what they can to help out. It's not a lot of work for them to put out a memo and/or casually ask around on your behalf. GO FOR IT!!! You need to start looking for ways to get there rather than finding reasons you can't. ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT THIS JOB??? GET BUSY!!!
Pearl ... how far is it between where you live and the job?

Is the job 4 or 5 days aweek?
@pearllederman: good follow-up Pearl ... the problem is it is dark at 5:30 ... walking, scooters and small vehicles are not safe at that hour.

Even a taxi may be unreliable.

Can you ask friends at church?

Some retired person might help you out for a couple weeks ... if the distance was short

Do pray about it.

What is the distance?

@questionWeaver: i sent a message to one of the pastors of one of the churches ive been going to about it
@pearllederman: Excellent Pearl!

You are on the ball!

Maybe .....after working there for several weeks you might be able to ask them if you can work from home. Several call centers have people that do that.

Look for walking distance as cab will cost a fortune both ways in a day in most places.
pearllederman · 61-69, F
it wouldnt be both ways, by the time i get out buses are running, ive thought of staying there during the wk
Cabs are expensive, Pearl. And, as I recall, you didn't like your last neighbours. Can you move closer to work? Can you advertise for a ride with someone who works at the call center or near it? I wish you good luck in this new job, Pearl.
pearllederman · 61-69, F
im thinking of asking at work but i havent started yet so im not around those people to ask, ive thought of staying near there during the wk
@pearllederman: Put up a sign at the work. There should be a room for employees to eat. Use the bulletin board. Someone might be able to help you. Try it, Pearl.
pearllederman · 61-69, F
@PoetryNEmotion: i need to wait till im there to do that
I would find a place to live near by.. If not too expensive.. You will get rid of the noises that the construction near your present home is causing.
That's why I asked you not to do it until you are sure that the job is a long term one. Also I like what Sophral and PoetryNEmotion, both said. If you can find someone in the call center and lives near you, maybe you two can arrange a lift and you can lay a little money to share the gas.
pearllederman · 61-69, F
thats why i thought of just staying somewhere during the wk and not make a move until im at the job for a while
Good idea Pearl.
pearllederman · 61-69, F
good idea, i forgot about those
