I Have a Question

What in your opinion is the path that leads to spiritual enlightenment?

You are absolutely right, Original. Emptying your mind opens it to a deeper understanding, one that doesn't need to follow your brain's self-survival thoughts, doesn't need words. There are a lot of introductory books about Buddhism, but my favorites are The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying, by Sogyal Rinpoche, and Awakening the Buddha Within, by Lama Surya Das. Both are aimed at American/Western readers. I also like to recommend the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke, in the Stephen Mitchell translation, especially The Duino Elegies.

Hunkalove, since you mentioned meditation, and now Buddha's words,I presume you're well informed about Buddhism. I know what Buddhism is generally about but I never studied it in depth so I'm not that informed. The thing that I was always curious about is meditation. In what way does meditation lead to enlightenment? I always thought of it as just letting yourself be,calming your mind and feeling the energy flow right through you while trying to empty your mind from everyday worries and trivial things by simply focusing on your breath. We humans usually learn from experience and our awareness expands by experiencing both good and bad things, but how does not thinking about anything bring you more understanding of this universe we live in?

I would really appreciate the response and perhaps you could suggest me some literature as well?
Young lady , meditation is there for u to practice reaching out of ur body ?? Si ?? U take all the shit out of ur mind and focus on ur breath because it stop the thinking and u hav to concentrates on counting ur breath , by this time ur energy will start flowing from toe to head , upwards ! U should feel slight tingling and a buzzing but u carnt stop the concentration , all this is happening while u count ur breath.... In out in out , u take ur mind off it and that's it back to square one , u have to practice this and when u get to the point , when u can hold it for a long time it's time to leap out and hit the ether, only good intentions, everybody wants to astral travel but it's extremely difficult and most they will end up doing is vivid dreaming :) anything else ??

Original and YNS, that reminds me of Buddha's last words: "Seek your own salvation." Also translated as "Follow your own path."

The one less traveled, where you don't follow the crowd, and you don't worry about typical things that people do, you try to see reasons for action from different perspectives.

I think you need to be true to yourself.

Meditation. And helping others.

@YNS719 I agree with you, following your own path will surely lead you to deeper understanding of things, whether it is from mistakes or from good experiences. And objectivity is,I guess one of the things a person who seeks enlightenment should strive for.
Not left and not right , straight down the middle! Not to much of this and not to much of that , only enough for one to get through to death :) stay in the middle :)

Originalme I didn't say anything about religion. You asked about spiritual enlightenment and I answered truthfully.

@WayneWantsLove: I'm sorry to hear that but I guess you yourself are aware that it brought you so much wisdom (speaking from my own experience here) and things that cannot be bought with money. Those are all important lessons that serve to make you a greater person! :)

Why you want spiritual enlightenment?
What is enlightenment?
Is it different than "what is" , the life?
When we say path, there is destination too or end point..is there end to life or mind?
Path also implies direction and time, both are limited..this is what organised religions did they gave a path or rule book..which separated the whole world..conflict..we humans broke down. On spherical earth, which direction or path will you prefer? :)
So if we see all this.. why to search ..what if we observe our actions, emotions, the whole movement of thoughts now.. fears, anxiety, sorrow, memories.. at this moment, there is nothing acting, no fear or anxiety or movement for path.. mind dwells back or forth so everything is in circle.. Now, what's going on?
So observation, alertness then perception.. affection..Love.. perhaps, something we feel.. something which cannot be put in words..
