When I was at school (boys only) I used to imagine that the cane was very much a male thing. Now I know that some girls were caned severely, and that some schoolmistresses were enthusiastic wielders of the cane.

@Martinll.I went to mixed schools in London, the cane was given across the hand. At junior school (8-11), it was given frequently, someone normally got it in my class eveyday, I got it when I was 10. 1 stroke as rule, but I do rembember one boy getting 2 across each hand, alternating hands for each stroke.

At secondary school (11-16), the cane was given far less frequently, not all teachers caned. I got it when I was 12 and 14. Again normally one stroke, but I do recall a boy getting 2 across each hand and a girl getting 1 across each hand. I think the view was that 1 was normally enough,getting a painful experience was sufficient deterrent and punishment, and it seemed to work.

@Dawntreader: Mine was a completely different regime. Boys direct grant grammar school, including lower school from age 8. Run on public school lines. Only the headmaster was authorised to use corporal punishment, though a couple of teachers in the lower school gave unofficial spankings. If you did get sent to the head, it was a beating.

I was caught sneaking out of school one break time to go to the sweet shop when I was 9. I was taken to the headmistress who, after a serious telling off, bent me over a chair, lifted my skirt and applied 3 hard strokes of her whippy cane across the seat of my knickers. It stung like hell!

@Dawntrader: 1 stroke of the cane sounds very civilised! The cane wasn't used all that much at my school - only for repeated misdemeanours or a few things which were deemed specially serious. I think it was usually six of the best.

True Martinll,dentention was a drag,normally you only got 1 stroke of the cane at my school and it was all over quickly. Also it showed your mates that you were quite tough and not a scaredy.
