I Believe Religion Should Stay Out Of Public Schools

No religion should be taught as the truth in Public School.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
I agree with your expansion, minus for British use the word "Public"*, but not headline.

I think pupils should be taught about religions to help them understand their own and others', different, beliefs and cultures; but certainly not indoctrinated in any one faith, nor insulated from or turned against any other.

====

*("Public Schools" in the UK are privately-run establishments teaching the same curricula as the State schools, many of them boarding-schools with day-attendees too. These charge parents the costly tuition and accommodation fees, though some also offer a few bursaries to promising pupils from the State education sector. The adjective is historical, recalling their being open to all who could afford them, when established many centuries ago as the only alternative at the time to hiring private tutors.

The State education schools are generally free for parents, apart from some nominal expenses like subsidised mid-day meal "Dinner Money", craft materials and the like. However the lines have become somewhat blurred as managing many English state schools has been hived off to so-called "Trusts" using poseur names like "College", "Academy" or "Federation"; middle-manager-esque waffle where "Trust" obscures their real identity as commercial contractors.)

Atheism/scientism is a religion and you are a believer in it. You were taught it in school
laotzu92 · 70-79, M
@hippyjoe1955 Actually, i am not a believer in it.( i went primarily to Catholic schools and frankly would encourage any parent, of whatever religion, to send his or her kids to catholic schools because of the superiority of the education, the discipline and rigor, and the values.) The Constitution says no law respecting an establishment of religion and so public schools may not favor one religion over another (nor can they require a student to say the pledge of allegiance).
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@laotzu92 In the US not in Canada. That aside you missed my point and that is that you can not eliminate religion. You can only switch one with another. Atheism/scientism is the dominant religion and it is required learning even in catholic/Christian schools.

Only satanism. Like in afterschool childrens satans club
Rhode57 · 56-60, M
Agreed .Religion should be kept out of schools full stop .I think religion should be left up to individual families and left to the kids to decide at 18 not brainwashed as kids .
I agree, but we know that's not going to be the way.
laotzu92 · 70-79, M
@froggtongue Somewhat belated reaction but no religious doctrine can be imposed in an American public school.
@laotzu92 right. But private schools are allowed to teach their nonsense.
laotzu92 · 70-79, M
@froggtongue or a strictly secular, atheistic curriculum if they wish.
laotzu92 · 70-79, M
@uknaked Is this your own creation?
Whether or not it is, it is balderdash.
uknaked · 70-79, M
@laotzu92 No, it is not my creation, but I certainly agree with it. It most certainly is not balderdash, most religions are idiotic, and damaging, particularly the catholic crap, where they ban sensible birth control, and demand money from those indoctrinated by years of brainwashing.
laotzu92 · 70-79, M
@uknaked so, a nice atheistic, materialistic viewpoint is preferable?
uknaked · 70-79, M
Organised religious fervour and difference, is the root of all violent conflict.

We had it forced on us as a legal requirement, however the older I got the more i grew to become an "unbeliever"
RickB67 · 56-60, M
I agree that all religions should not be taught in public schools except as what ever part in history they may have played and in those cases not taught any more in depth than just like a political party in action or such. Religious beliefs and instruction is for the home and whatever church their family attends.

Not in a way that tries to force kids to practice it.
M3JollyMiles · 31-35, M
Religion shouldn't be taught at all at any school...☺
EnigmaticGeek · 61-69, M
I believe that no school should be run by government. Making that change would lower the costs of educating society while simultaneously improving education.

With all schools privatized, each one would be free to decide what is taught with respect to religion, or not.

Public Education would become a 100% voucher program, and the parents or guardian of each child would choose the school it attends. The only role government would have is to ensure that every child receives an education that at a minimum, provides all the knowledge that everyone needs to succeed in society from school(s) (including home schools) chosen by its parents/guardians.
kaf9292 · 80-89, M
@EnigmaticGeek Don't tell that to the "Evangelical Christians" of the Republican party.
EnigmaticGeek · 61-69, M
@kaf9292 I've already told some of them, and I'd gladly tell all of them.

Of course, the Democrats are equally problematic, in that they want the government to run all schools.

Agree with you completely

i did not believe as a child so i did not understand why i had to go to a class and be told what to believe and be tested on it
NakedExperiment · 51-55, M
No religion should be taught as the truth anywhere, especially in schools.
norinradd · 46-50, M

DZRHNDS · 56-60, M

Religion is a word, I think it describes a greater being? A leader of mankind? If schools want to teach kids about religion, at least tell them the truth. The earth and nature should be our religion, without it we are dead.
laotzu92 · 70-79, M
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion"-from First Amendment to U.S. Constitution.
NakedExperiment · 51-55, M
Or state schools. I don't believe any religious school should receive state funding.
GoldenWorm · 51-55, M
Right, it's the parents job if at all. The teachers shouldn't get to expand their sect.

I agree completely!
bhatjc · 46-50, M
Amen to that.
SW-User
I agree - but I think religious education is important so people have a better understanding of different religions and cultures and how to be respectful of them
ronisme1 · 61-69, M
I agree, church is the best place where people are allowed to choose what religion they want
SW-User
@ronisme1 As well as choosing not to be in a religion, people have a right whether to believe in god or not.
