I Think Marijuana Should Be Legalized

Many people today want marijuana to be legal as a recreational drug but i am still skeptical with regard to how safe it is. Is there anyone on this blog who can honestly say that after smoking marijuana they became addicted to it or that it did them any other harm? I am prepared to accept the possibility but remain unconvinced. Here's your chance to speak up if you are a 'dope victim'. This is not a joke. I just want the truth, no nonsense please.
Without filters, I think it is a comparable risk to tobacco smoke, and there are devices to filter out the worst parts of the vapor. So probably overall safer than tobacco....

Like any drug, it can be overused and someone can become addicted. That said, the social costs of prohibition are huge. We are fueling a drug trade that makes criminals in Mexico get very rich and is destabilizing their country. We have something like 10% of our prison cells in the country now filled with prisoners whose only crime was selling marijuana. It seems like a waste of public funds and of peoples' lives. And, finally, we are losing out on significant tax revenues.

This is not heroin, and for me it falls reasonably under the classification of recreational drug and should be legalized.

You my friend have a very valid point!
And I should add I don't smoke it. I'm just trying to be objective about the social cost and benefit, and to me it seems that the war we are fighting is like Prohibition in the 1920s and the pain doesn't really equal the gain.

@pone22: Hello. I agree with you on that. Prohibition does not work. It is a failed tactic in our response to popular recreational drugs which in the 1920's actually made problems associated with the illegal manufacture, sale and use of alcohol considerably worse. We now have an opportunity to learn from that mistake and come up with a smarter response to marijuana!

I know a lot about this.
first, safety
an LD50 is a measurement of lethality give the test animals X amount of the substance,, increase the dosage till it kills half of them
they have not been able to establish an LD50, seems you cant poison a mammal with this substance.
Second,, addictive qualities
there are two kinds of addiction, chemical and mental
pot is not physically addictive. There are negative side effects for a heavy user when they go cold turkey.
but mental/ emotional addiction is independent of the substance used.

I live (part time)in a "free state" for cannabis, and here have been some challenges. the worst is that kids are getting hold of the most potent extracts, and these are very strong,, and tho not addictive or poisonous of themselves, kids have few tools for resisting pleasant but unhelpful behavior, like being wasted all day.

so no it was not the "gate way drug"
that would have been Sugar, a story for another time

Hello Amylynne. OKAY we'll leave the full story for another time but out of curiosity what is the LD50 of Sugar? It's too late for Elvis but I'd still like to know.
Amylynne · 26-30, F
30 g/kg.
thats 30 grams for each Kilo you weigh
will999 · 70-79, M
Thanks Amylynne. I'd better go easy on the choc- chip cookies hey. They're about 400 grams a pack and I bet the main ingredient is sugar.

Cannabis oil is really beneficial to people who are suffering from other sorts of ailments. Marijuana is safer than alcohol I know that.

Denial is always a sign of dependency.
I am sorry but its impossible to hold a coherent conversation with someone whose very behaviour clearly indicates illicit substance dependency.
I respectfully suggest you detox asap before your psychosis effects your judgement further.
I will not carry on a conversation with a person who is prone to violent outbursts simply because they can't have their own way.
Of child, your regression to a child like state is yet another indicator of the dramatic influence foul drugs like cannabis can have on individuals.
Good day Sir

Listen old man, go to your spankings or whatever your fetish is. I don't care to hear about your opinion on how I live my life. I already told you twice I don't smoke weed. Are you that ignorant you can't read?
Amylynne · 26-30, F
@mazza62: no it is not the same,, alcohol is a poison,,known and tested
cannabis has never killed anyone that way.
you use the word illicit
well it is not so where I live
I think you might like to re examine the evidence
Please look at my posts here on this subject

OH and there are NO absolutes,, every thing is relative

My parents been smokin that crap for over 10+ years now.. From what ive seen it doesn't really do much. Well, for them at least. But my father who's mentally ill when hes drunk to much booze along with smokin pot he tends to see stuff. Like people outside when there aint and have an episode. Paranoid pretty much. Uhm for the other one it doesn't seem to do much as I have mentioned. They're pretty much addicted to pot but I would rather them smoke than drink vodka all day. I guess it depends on the person who uses it.
Smikezz2 · 46-50, M
You are correct. The booze has alot to do with paranioa. I know, I used to be a booze hound. Alcohol messes with your mind over time.

To summarise. My original question was 'has marijuana HARMED YOU. Most of the negative comments in reply focus on what people have READ ABOUT IT or what they BELIEVE ABOUT IT or behaviour witnessed in others that they thought was induced by marijuana. Have any of you ever read a genuine personal account of progressive decline into hopeless despair and disability through marijuana? Neither have I. I am not saying it is harmless. I'm saying that I'm struggling to see evidence of lasting damage that is solely attributable to marijuana. I am willing to admit that it probably increases the risk associated with the use of other toxic drugs if it's taken at the same time and should definitely not be given to under eighteen year olds. I agree with DUI restrictions. Lessons learned from the unsuccessful prohibition of alcohol may apply to marijuana to some degree. Even if it's not 100% safe to use a legal code of responsible use may help to reduce the harm. It may even lead to a reduction of violent crime if it helps to put the drug smugglers and bootleggers out of business.
mazza62 · 61-69, M
Absolutely not. Its a dangerous drug and needs to be controlled. It is linked to creating permanent changes in brain chemistry and can induce psychosis. These side effects are usually permanent.
Smikezz2 · 46-50, M
Please tell me how alcohol is much safer than weed. P.s. I don't smoke weed but I still agree with the legalization of it. It's a plant that comes from the earth.
mazza62 · 61-69, M
Who says its safer. Read my other comment
Smikezz2 · 46-50, M
I did read your other comment.
amnotthattired · 31-35, F
Its safer if theres no additives or chemical sprays added to it in the growing process. Organic is the best .
amnotthattired · 31-35, F
Theres a certain type of Cannabis oil that kills cancer.
Smikezz2 · 46-50, M
You are very correct!
