I Am Interested In Wicca

My fiancée is Wiccan but she doesn’t really practice it. Occasionally she will meditate in the apartment. Or when she goes with me when I scout for hunting season, she will spend time sitting quietly somewhere and listen to the wind, the leaves, the birds, and nature as a whole.

Despite being engaged and dating for several years, I still do not know that much about Wicca. That was an agreement we both made early on in our relationship; I don’t push my religion on to her and she doesn’t push hers on to me. So here is where I need some help.

One: Can someone explain to me what Wicca is and how I can show respect to it for her?

Two: We are about to start shopping around for our first house. Is there anything I should lookout for that might affect her religion in both negative and positive ways?

Wicca is a branch of paganism where they have a strong affinity with and connection with nature.
It's hard to explain it all briefly! Typically, Wiccans believe in a God and a Goddess and sometimes multiple ones (from older traditions). The female aspect is as important as the male.

Quite a lot of it involves reflection on your life, or life generally (not just yours).
There is quite a lot of symbolism involved in it.

There is the wheel of the year with quite a few Sabbats including the Solstices and other 2 quarters of the year and times that would have been quite important centuries back, originally related to farming (crops, animals) and what needs doing throughout the year. Now it tends to be a time to reflect.

The phases of the moon are quite important and representative. You say she does not regularly practice it but it could still play a part.

Wiccans and Pagans may have an interest in history - such as ancient stone circles and how our ancestors lived, and their origins.

Wicca is a relatively new 'religion' ( often not called a religion) but is partly based on how people would have lived in the past. As I said, nature is quite a big part of it.

Thank you for this. Anything I should be looking for with the house shopping? Trees to avoid?, the direction of the house, stones used on the house or in the yard... anything like that?

I'm not knowledgeable about trees but did look through a book briefly about this and I'd say no generally but I'd say this is a question your OH wouldn't mind answering.

Direction of the house - this sounds feng shui related, which could be incorporated into Wicca. I don't know if she follows this. I think you might need a book on it really if this is something important to her.

I'd say what she would value the most would be respect. A lot of things in Christianity are actually taken from Paganism and claimed as Christian (despite some Christians sometimes having strong views or misinformed beliefs about Pagans). They do not worship Satan, for one. I know you would not want to get in to an argument. I'm not sure of her character (gentle/strongly independent and self assured) but perhaps you could write some things down in a short letter, saying that you respect her and her beliefs and asking her things as you don't want to do something wrong or offensive without realising it.

I studied it quite a bit last year and nothing stands out as a 'no' in response to your questions but the best answer would come from her. By house shopping, do you mean food shopping? I wouldn't actually class myself as Wiccan or a witch, not sure about Pagan. Some foods represent different things in spells (although I don't know if she does this). Apples are used in love spells sometimes. She may have a specific area she's interested in - nature obv is an important part, but I find the herbalism part interesting. You can use herbs in cooking and other things like to calm you or help you concentrate as well as many other things. Perhaps she'd be interested in having some herbs in the garden if you haven't already? I did read in a Scott Cunningham book that it's good to plant them at a certain time/direction but I can't remember that now.
