I Like Bob Dylan
I am so very glad Bob Dylan received the Nobel prize for Literature.
It was with a certain amusement that I heard some question the pertinence of giving such a prestigious prize to a song writer, forgetting on the way, that songs are before all poetry that is sang.
I personally love Bob Dylan's songs and the lyrics are of such quality.
I was fortunate to see Joan Baez on stage a few years ago and she obviously had quite a few anecdotes about Mr Dylan.
The one that stuck to my mind is her describing how he would frantically have writing spells, inking pages after pages and very often throwing a lot of it straight into the paper basket.
One morning she pulled a few pages out of curiosity and one of the songs caught her attention. So she saved the page, wrote music and started singing it on stage.
Bob Dylan emerging from his creative torpor heard the song and told her: I like this song, the lyrics are superb, who wrote if for you?
And she to explain to him that it was him.
I love how it shows the attention she gave to his creativeness, aware of the way he would dispose of beautiful lyrics.
And how he, so taken by his writing, wouldn't even acknowledge his own talent.
I grew up listening to Dylan, Baez, Simon and Garfunkel, and I feel privileged and spoiled to have been fed such amazing lyrics and music.
For those who don't know Dylan, I invite you to listent him. I am sure you will find a song you love amongst the hundred and thousands he wrote.
