Besides English and Spanish, what's the next most useful language to know in the US?

I'm just brainstorming my future plans. Right now, I'm taking Duolingo Spanish lessons to brush up on my Spanish, but I think I wanna learn something else after that.

Many never consider American Sign Language. It is extremely useful. So many need interpreters.

and braille.

which i should consider.

That's a good point. I met a few college friends who were taking ASL classes. I'll consider that.
Serenitree · F
Yes. I feel that ASL should be taught to every child, starting in kindergarten, and it would take only one generation for everybody to know it. Done properly, it could be a universal language, at least, on the North American continent.

I'd say it's useful because many people speak it and I can reach out to more people who only speak Spanish and not English. I see your point though. I'll think about it.

Okay, I understand. With that said, I still plan to improve my Spanish a little more, and from the replies so far, I think I will try to start attempting to learn the basics of Mandarin.
Serenitree · F
It makes no difference. The US is so multicultural that any language you choose will be useful, especially if you want to be an interpreter, in any capacity.

That's a god point. And I'm not trying to be a professional interpreter. I just think it'll be useful so I can speak to more people and gain more professional connections or talk to more customers if need be.
I suppose it depends on what part where you want to live/work in. But for a general WAG, Chinese would be high on the list I suppose.
hiddenkitty · 26-30, F
Great suggestion! What is WAG? I'm not familiar with that acronym and Google isn't helping.
@hiddenkitty: wild a$$ed guess....
hiddenkitty · 26-30, F
@VeronicaJane: oh lol

It might depend on where you live. If there's a specific ethnic community or history, that would be a good one to learn.Globally, definitely would say mandarin.
hiddenkitty · 26-30, F
Okay, that's good to know. Thank you for the suggestion.

Arabic is most useful wherever you go. Learn some verses Quran if possible. Life saver, really.
hiddenkitty · 26-30, F
Arabic sounds interesting. And I can see how learning a bit about the Quran can be useful. I'll think about it.

What other guy said. Mandarin, Arabic, or Indian lol
hiddenkitty · 26-30, F
Okay. And by Indian, do you mean Hindi, the language spoken in India?
SW-User
@hiddenkitty: Yeah that. I keep forgetting the name for it lol

French is good. I'm trilingual and I'm thinking of learning French
hiddenkitty · 26-30, F
My friend actually just took a French class this year, and he seemed to like it. I'll think about it.
xRedx · M
I belive French is the third most common language in the US.
mysoulsays · 36-40, M
Sanskrit.. especially if you are from the IT world
hiddenkitty · 26-30, F
I just googled that. I don't think I've heard of Sanskrit before. I might just read up about it later. Thanks for the suggestion.
mysoulsays · 36-40, M
You're welcome. Please do research and read.. its the future!
katielass · F
Togalog (sp?)
hiddenkitty · 26-30, F
Oh, okay. I would have never thought of that, but I'll think about it. Thank you for the suggestion!
katielass · F
@hiddenkitty: Filipinos speak that. But they're pretty good with Spanish as well.
hiddenkitty · 26-30, F
Okay. I have a few facebook friends who know Tagalog. I just didn't realize how common it was here.
