You have to be frustratingly patient. I see so many parents try then break several minutes in. Hence, the cycle repeats.
My son knew I have the ability to wait forever. I think I broke his spirit a bit with how well I could control him.

Distract them with something like a toy...especially if they are around 2 years old.
