I Am Stronger Because of All I've Been Through

Summer Solstice

"The arrival of summer as lignt wins over darkness"

Summer I love you .. now that you are here all life reaches a crescendo of joy, where I don my shorts and walk in the woods, and breath in the wonderful air.  All nature is alive around me, as it has risen from it's dormant state within the earth.

If you live in New England, summer must be earned.  We watch it slowly die in the fall, as leaves turn a myriad of colors, and it bows to the cold wind that chases us inside.  And then we are in winter that seems to last longer than any other season.  Winter enters with cold and snow and seams to be the most stubborn season lingering on like a guest that has stayed way too long.

And then spring, but I have to say that some years we have spring and some years we don't.  Winter will often rob spring of its allotted time, continuing to deliver bits of rain, snow, and drizzle.

But finally, summer arrives.  It has to.  Neither winter or spring in any form can keep it out.  Finally we have that one day that reaches 80 degrees (F) and the winter dwellers come out of their caves and look into the bright light and squint and shade their eyes.

Summer will sometimes stumble in upon its entrance, and give us rain that nourishes the earth as it prepares it for summer's warm light.

I revel in summer.  I skip and scamper about like my little chipmunk that lives in the stone wall in my back yard.  I need to soak it in for all it is worth.  I awaken early not wanting to waste a moment of light and stay up late hours after the sunlight has faded.
I am so preoccupied with life that I barely hear the news on TV that summer solstice will occur today.   How can this be?  How could it have happened so fast?  Was it just six months ago that I was suffering through winter, as I crawled through the darkness.

Now I am not without ritual in some things, and for the most part I claim not to be superstitious.   But in the past on the day of summer solstice my daughter and I would drive to the beach and watch the sun slowly rise above the horizon and burn its way through the mist and then it suddenly appears in its fullness .   Then that same evening we would drive to the top of a local mountain, and watch the sun set as it slowly slips below the horizon often with releasing shades of beautiful orange and purple light.

There, we have done it! We have grabbed all the light that we could possibly get out of one day.

Ah well, it's official now.  Summer is here.
