I Love to Dance

I have loved music and dancing since I was 3.

I'm half white and half arab and my family would take me to the fair to see the belly dancers. It was love at first sight. They took me for my heritage, but I later found out they don't dance like that where my father came from (Kuwait). I didn't care, it called to a part of my soul that didn't care about all of that.

I was a belly dancer for 3 years in a row for Halloween. A couple of times, to my mother's dismay, I went to the belly dancers at the State fair and showed them my belly roll. My mom got me some music cds at 15 and I taught myself to zaghareet. I also started a couple of belly dance vhs (this was before DVDs became more common).

I wore a traditional dress from Saudi Arabia in a parade, some dancers asked if I was a dancer, I said no but I would love to learn and they hooked me up with who to go to. So at 15 I started classes. My dad said "****** no you can't do this. This is the dancing of whores and gypsies." And I told him I didn't care lol. My mom said no because my dad said no but she was secretly thrilled. My grandma said she'd never seen me defy my dad before hehe. I was living with my grandparents so my parents couldn't do anything about it.

My relatives teased me that I couldn't dance - to be fair, my first choreography was difficult for a beginner. Even my teachers said so. I wore a veil that covered most of my belly. When my dad saw that it was artistic, and not some seedy club like where he grew up (Macedonia) then he was ok with hit.

I no longer perform but I still study it at home.

I love belly dancing. Its been here for me during my hardest times. Sometimes its the only thing that gets rid of my stress or that releases me. It cleanses me and makes me feel free. Theres a part of my sould that only dancing can satisfy.

It is obvious you've held a deep soulful appreciation for the art of belly dance from a very young age. Your story reeks of passion and it is a shame that regional practices and/or beliefs hinder you. Myself, as well, have always been mesmerized by the dance, Please don't deny your talent, your dreams, by being suppressed. Dance and show them what they are missing..and what you are missing. As you well know- just how powerful the dance is..that is enough to convince them of their blindness. Escape from those chains and let those marvelous belly rolls of yours devour the evil notions that hold you back. You know how much power you hold within..release it and live your life through your dance.

You are so right that there is a part of the soul that only dance can satisfy. It is sad if people associate dance with sex and titillation. It is so much more beautiful and life-affirming than that.
