I Discipline My Daughter

I expect my girls to say sir and ma'am to adults
MissyChrissy · 18-21, F
My Daddy insists in that too, Sir
MissyChrissy · 18-21, F
@HeadoftheHouse Of course, Sir. Please look at my stories to see what happens, if I don't. 😞

@MissyChrissy I have an idea
MissyChrissy · 18-21, F
@HeadoftheHouse Which one, Sir?

I'm in my early twenties and where I came from kids were raised to respect older people as authorities, especially teachers. The result of it was that I felt I could never trust any of my teachers because there was a huge wall between us. I still feel a barrier between older people and me. Even if I'm asked by an older person to stop talking to them in a formal way and call them by their first name I can't do that because the habit is stronger. This sucks if you need to work together on some project because that causes problems in communication.

Every time I talk in a formal way I feel as if I was saying "don't come closer, you're a stranger to me". That can't create much of a friendly environment, right?

@MrsVulcano: Nobody ever died from respecting other people Miss !

If you where my daughter, you got punished for saying such a thing, in public !
I understand the respect part, but to me it creates a barrier between children and adults. I'd never be comfortable talking to adults if I had to address them as such all the time; formal occasions and first introductions are fine. You can show manners and respect without such prefixes/titles.

I had the same rule

I have to as well
Eh I do it; but that's for either teachers/mentors whom I am not particularly close to or strangers.

As for the adults I comfortable with I'll address them however I want.

Nothing wrong with instilling good manners at an early age!

Now, how you go about it is another matter entirely...
