I Have A Pet Peeve

When people draw mermaids' tails like this.

Mermaids' tails should NEVER be able to bend like that. Fish and whale fins are almost like an elongated spine, and each vertebrae should have very limited movement... For the tail to look like that, it has to either be;
A. broken, or
B. Normal legs stuffed into the skin of a fish/whale tail.

Curious now. Have you ever found an illustration of a mermaid with her tail bend correctly? And, thanks sharing your post. 馃槉

@SapphicHeart Yes, I have! I feel like half of the people who draw mermaids do this thing, while the other draw them in a way that biologically makes sense.

Funnily enough, even though everyone say mermaids are part fish, they're most often drawn with whale tails - as in, made to bend up and down. which makes sense, as our spines bend that way and the tail would be an elongation of the spine.

Here are two drawings with the sort of "sway" actual mermaid tails should have, with no broken tail.

You know I have never thought of this. But now that you mention it, it`s true. My thinking now is they do it to make them look more alluring. Just a thought. Thank you for this.

I agree, this mermaid wouldn't be able to swim very well with a tail articulated like that.

I'm going with b. They are trying to give the Mermaid a more human form

Maybe they have more joints?
NorthernRoses22-25, F
Shouldn't have that range of motion either way.
