Do you know how to use a compass?

Can you read a map? I can do both thanks to my dad and Girl Scouts. :-D

Read the sun? Like telling time using your shadow? Or?
@PeanutsauntieP1982: Nope directions, what if you lose your compass?
PeanutsauntieP1982 · 41-45, F
@SBelle: Well, you could orient yourself based on which direction the sun rises and sets in, or if it's night and you can see the North Star, you can use it as a guide too.

Yes, very useful. As a kid, my dad, brother and I would go hiking in the deserts, mountains, and the couple of forests close by. He'd make me tell him when the map said to turn, and my brother and I traded duty with the compass so we'd come out where we started. I sure enjoyed those hikes...:-D :-D

You remind me of a dear friend of mine. I'm good with finding the directions, like north, west, ect, but suck when it comes to telling my left from my right.*blushes*

Yes both in an aircraft and on the ground. Can you use a Roamer?
PeanutsauntieP1982 · 41-45, F
No. Truth is, I'm not even sure what that is. Care explaining a lil?

@PeanutsauntieP1982: A roamer is used when give and receive a grid reference on a map. It is widely used in the armed forces. Someone sends you a series of letters and numbers and you use the roamer to find a spot on the map. They are incredibly accurate if used correctly.

Yes, definitely. I was also a Girl Scout and predate GPS. 😄

Same here. GPS is useful, but too many folks use it as a crutch. I have a dear friend who, though she drove the same route to my house over two hundred times with an onboard GPS unit, got lost and had to call me for directions to my house the few times she couldn't drive a GPS enabled vehicle. I navigate by sight and memory, plus a bit of intuition.
Yes, same sources. I learned a surprising amount as a Scout.
