I Play the Guitar

Since The Age Of 12 I have loved playing guitar. There have been times when I haven’t played at all for a while but guitar has been something I have returned to every time. I bought my first guitar second hand from a neighbourhood friend who had already been playing for a while and had been bought a new guitar for her birthday. I believe the price I paid was a measly £7 which seems a ridiculously low price by today’s standards.

I learned to play mostly by using songbooks to master new chords and songs. I also played a little at school and had a few lessons. I didn’t take guitar playing seriously at that time and didn’t progress as much as I could have. During my later years at school I fell in love with rock music and tried to learn what I could even though I had only a classical style guitar. By the age of 18 I had an electric guitar and was jamming as much as possible with friends. That led to meeting new people and playing in a more focused way with bands performing mostly 60's and rock music, and also some busking in the street. At that stage in my life my guitar came with me pretty much everywhere I went.

Just lately I have returned to playing mostly electric guitar although, for the past few years prior, I have mostly played acoustic guitar and sung songs at home for my own amusement. I have also been known to perform a few songs for people I have spoken to online.

The guitar is a wonderful instrument to play. It offers a huge range of expression, can be played solo or with a band just as easily, doesn’t necessarily require amplification (acoustic guitar), and is an easy instrument to transport. Few instruments can offer such versatility. And the drawbacks of playing guitar? There are so many guitars, amplifiers, and effects units all promising to be better than the previous generations, that it is easy to spend huge amounts of money on this interest over the years. I have certainly thrown plenty of money at it and I suspect many other guitarists have done exactly the same thing. Somehow it is all worth it, though, for the enjoyment it brings. One thing to remember is that all the gadgets and gizmos, however good they are, won’t make so much difference to your overall sound as working hard to become a more accomplished guitarist will. That is something many people, like me, only figure out after spending lots of money. However, it’s nice to have all the extras as well!

I began playing guitar when I was 13, and in rock bands at 15 and then country bands. I sold my last guitar 8 years ago. I have arthritis and my hands don't work well enough anymore. I miss it! Enjoy it while you can!

I'm sorry; that's a real shame about your hands. And thank you. I will!

My boyfriend was a lead guitar player in CA years ago. I would sing a few songs with them. I love the guitar and only learned how to play "Hang Down Your Head Tom Dooly," and "Blowin' In The Wind." I don't know if I can play it anymore. 🎸Great story, I love the acoustic 12 string most of all. ⭐

@Peaches Mostly I play at home on my own nowadays but I often sing and play songs on my acoustic. I have a vocal harmoniser as well which is fun - I love the technology side of it all too.

@fazer1k That would be fun, don't think I've ever seen a vocal harmonizer? Have a groovy day, I gotta get going! 👋🏼😊

@Peaches Thanks. You too! 🙂

Interesting read. I play the guitar too, getting one for £7 is shocking 😂
On an average how much time would you dedicate to your guitar everyday?
fazer1k · 56-60, M
Haha, it was a long time ago I bought a guitar for that price.

I used to play a lot more than I do now and it varies now, too. I probably average just an hour or so a day now.

My Dad played a guitar also, he was really good at it.

That's lovely. :-)

I have played drums most of my life and cannot imagine ever stopping. I have played guitar, amazing instrument, but temperamental af. Still, I do pick up my Taylor 410 once in a while. I'm about as good as I was in the 80s, lol.

I can't imagine ever stopping completely, either. The Taylor 410 is a nice guitar. :-)

@fazer1k: thanks. Kinda a midrange piece. Records very well. Thicker bottom end from the lower strings, even with the wimpy strings I use. Lol.

What's your favorite guitar?
fazer1k · 56-60, M
@vetguy1991 Difficult question! Probably the MM Reflex in my avatar but I play my Variax a lot nowadays purely for its versatility. How about you?
vetguy1991 · 51-55, M
@fazer1k well I just have an epiphone acoustic, but if I had the money probably a les paul black beauty

@vetguy1991 Those black beauties are lovely. I have a Less Paul Standard which was my main guitar for a long time but my back is weaker now and it's too heavy for comfort. Nowadays they make them lighter by boring holes in the body.

Acoustic guitar is a lovely instrument. I play one of those also.
