I Am Christian

Once there was a burly woodsman who went out walking in the forest. By and by he came to a fork in the path. Both paths looked safe enough, so he took the one on the right. As he journeyed along, the forest around him became denser causing it to become darker and darker. Undaunted, he continued on. After a bit, he came across a strange little man meandering along the path ahead of him. The little man was dressed all in black and was carrying a large club. The woodsman stopped and with a cheerful smile he said hello.

The little man didn’t even look at the woodsman but instead continued meandering along the path without saying a word. Puzzled by the little man’s reaction, the woodsman called out, “Forgive me, sir, but are you lost? Do you need some help?”

The little man stopped and turned to the woodsman. His face was heavily wrinkled and his eyes were as black as midnight. The little man fixed his gaze on the woodsman, instantly sending a cold shiver through the woodsman’s body. It felt as if those black eyes were boring a hole right through the woodsman. The smile on the woodsman’s face faded and the little man’s thin mouth curled up into a wicked grin. The little man came closer to the woodsman and leaned slowly in towards him. As he did, he seemed to grow taller and wider. The woodsman shrugged it off and once again asked the man if he needed any help, his smile returning as he spoke. The little man quickly backed away, and as he did he seemed to get smaller once again. “I don’t need your help”, said the little man in a raspy hissing voice. He hesitated for a moment and then added slyly, “But you will need mine”. “Oh?” said the woodsman. “Why’s that?” The little man’s wicked grin broadened. “There’re many ferocious animals that live along this path”, he said, “all waiting to devour a lone traveler such as yourself. I have traveled this path many times and I alone know where they hide. Come with me and I’ll get you safely through.” “Is that why you carry a club?” asked the woodsman, “to kill these wild beasts?” “I do not kill anything”, said the little man coldly, “I only cripple. If death comes from that, it is not my doing.” The woodsman grinned. “Thank you for the offer”, he said flexing his muscles, “but I think I can handle any beasts that might come along. Besides, I’m never alone”. The little man looked rapidly around but saw no one else. “I see no other”, he hissed. The woodsman smiled. “God’s always with me. For it is written, ‘I will never leave you, nor forsake you’”.
The little man narrowed his eyes. There are many other dangers”, he said quickly brushing off the woodsman’s words. “Yes, parts of the path ahead have been washed away by earlier rains. But I know secret routes around them. Follow me and I’ll show them to you.” Once again the little man seemed to grow larger as he moved closer to the woodsman. “No thanks”, said the woodsman, “I’ll be fine. For it is written, ‘In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.’”
The little man seemed to get smaller once again; perhaps even a bit smaller than before. “Bah!” he exclaimed sharply. The little man stated to move down the path but stopped and once again offered his help to the woodsman. “It’ll be getting dark soon”, he hissed, “and you have no light. This path has many obstacles on it. I know them all; let me lead you around them”. The woodsman shook his head. “No thanks”, he said. “For it is written, ‘Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path’”. The woodsman looked at the little man for a moment. “Actually, it’s you who have no light. Are you sure YOU don’t need MY help?” The little man grew even smaller and with a loud snarl, he quickly darted away. “Hey, I never got your name” called out the woodsman. “It’s Fear”, replied the little man as he disappeared into the forest.

Don’t let fear lead you. Fears’ greatest weapon is that it cripples. The more we dwell in it, the more crippled it makes us. However, fear has no power over the Lord. So when the storms of life seem overwhelming and you feel as if you’re going to sink, don’t let fear lead you, but instead look to God.

“I sought the Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.” - Psalms 34:4
