Why would God need to have a gender?

PoizonApple · 41-45, F
Because men created Him in their image.
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
☝ This. It also helps the male dominated religions to keep it that way while oppressing women.
Firespirit · 22-25, M
cause he is made up by humans

Obviously, but that doesn't explain we he needs a gender.
Firespirit · 22-25, M
@KaliKali: Well since religion is a power structure depends on society but most times the god is male and maybe a female for the mothers

Kali resents that.

So humans, in all of our arrogant wonder, can identify with God better.

Here is an interesting thought or two because I enjoy making fun of religion and especially the bible.

According to scientific DNA evidence the Humans that we are all descended from lived in East Africa. As we all know the original inhabitants of Africa are what we refer to as black people.

If we are to take the story of creation in the bible literally we have to assume that Adam and Eve were Black people. Furthermore according to the bible we were created in the image of our maker. Therefore god is Black.

Also I don't believe that a male alone could have created this splendid universe. Us males are too destructive. So I have to presume that a female force was also involved.

This implies that god is a Black hermaphrodite...:-)

@Misty71: I thought you might like it considering the T that appears after your username.
@Wraithorn: I hope you weren't using that as a flirting technique. Cause as sick as I might be at times, I've got no illusions about my divinity. 😉
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@Misty71: No I wasn't flirting. After I left my answer to this question I looked at what other people had said. I noticed your T and thought that if anyone is likely to comment on what I said it would be you. My thought turned out to be correct. That's all.

so he can have hot sex
A gender makes him relateable on a personal level. I suspect that God does not have a penis.

This is the first time I've seen you not worrying about someone else's gender. Good progress!

To make Mary pregnant

She doesn't...
To justify shackling the women to the stove. Alternatively, if you're a feminist, to justify political lesbianism.
I'm not quite buying the connection between political lesbianism and goddess worship. Just saying. The stove stuff makes a little more sense, but I could spin it better talking about gathering nuts and berries instead of hunting, though.
Eh, I wasn't going to give a real answer, but you kind of forced my hand. There is no such thing as a society in which sex roles are reversed, and in most first world societies, in which freedom of choice is maximized, you don't see a closing of sex role distinctions, you see an exacerbation of them. The obvious conclusion is that sex roles are just a natural outgrowth of biological predispositions in different material contexts. God has a sex in most of the popular perceptions of religion because patriarchy is a human universal, like the incest taboo. Not to say that because something is "universal" that it's right or ineliminable, just that it manifests of its own accord to some degree whenever people aren't paying any attention. Religion is a man-made product, so it bears the imprint of our biases and idiosyncrasies. Hence, in most popular perceptions, the supreme being is male.
IKR, and who was His mother ? Dude just shows up out of nowhere, creates all this crap here there and everywhere and he says his name is God. Yeah Rightttt !
She probably doesn't need one, but it probably makes him more relatable to his creations who have them.

Because humans cannot comprehend genderlessness
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
Because we all create God in our own image.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
That one always rang false for me. However, as a human construct, I believe that the LCD can only embrace a gendered being. Seems really stupid. And, I believe in God.

Oh! Duh. xD

I was thinking to myself "okay, C definitely stands for Church."

I hesitate to bash religion, as most attempt to comfort, or at least try to explain life. That said, it's often applied to justify nefarious purposes. That corruption does not make me dismiss all of it.
