I Need Your Opinions Or Feedback

So im in college in the UK and want to go to university after. I just have no idea what to do. Not to brag or anything, but I feel like, with subjects, I can achieve with anything as long as it's taught to me. I want the highest paid job possible, and therefore want a subject to choose that will allow me to get it. Any suggestions?

Wow, good for you, princess. Sounds like you're a smart cookie with ambition and that is terrific. My recommendation for you is that you take your time exploring a number of interests once you are in university. You'll be especially fortunate if you find a subject that leads to a profession that allows you to live a life with boundless curiosity and passion as well makes a good living for you and your future family. Money is important, I know. This society and the media reinforces that theme again and again. But they don't necessarily lead to the kind of personal happiness one can have if one puts living a life led by inspiration can give.

Joseph Campbell, the man who inspired others to "live with passion" and who wrote the iconic "The Power of Myth" that became the inspiration for the George Lucas "Star Wars" movies had this to say,

"Survival, prestige and self-development are not the values a mythically inspired person lives for. A person gripped by a vocation, a dedication, a belief, a zeal, will sacrifice his security, his life, personal prestige and relationships and will give himself wholly to his zeal."

When I first read those words they seemed a little extreme and unrealistic. But now as I grow older and explore more, I'm beginning to feel that there is a substance which I am still too young and experienced to put a finger on. I want success....yes. But is there more to it than external rewards? I'm still on that journey of discovery. I wish you the best in yours!

I've thought a bit more about the subject since my last post to you, princess. I thought of Dr. Campbell's exhortation to "follow your passion" and then thought "but what if what you are passionate about... you suck at... skill wise?" or "what if it's a dead end?" regarding making the kind of money you need to care for your family.

I am leaning towards a compromise between passion and pragmatism. The best match to living a fulfilled life might begin with being able to assess realistically what you are really good at versus activities where you can only be a dilettante at best. For example I excel at math and science, in fact, the skill got me a full scholarship at a major university here in the U.S. I'm also a pretty good fiddle player, dancer, and singer....but I know I'm no Mozart nor can I begin to compete with those remarkable people you see winning those "A Star is Born" talent shows. Good enough for being in the chorus line at community theater and playing in my dad's bluegrass band....but that's about it.

Where the confusion lies is that I really do have more "fun" being a cheerleader and sawing away at my fiddle at a dance....but it's a hobby. And I'm glad to have them because they do a great job at letting off steam from cracking the books 50 hours a week.

I'm learning to appreciate more and more my fascination for studying complex engineering problems....and eventually becoming part of a solution. There's not a lot of whoop factor here....but once I'm intrigued with a problem....I'm on it like a bulldog on sirloin bone. I relish it!

@jon2403 oh wait you mean like being in the military? No thanks, I'm not going to help people kill people. Just for the sake of gaining resources
Itsprincess · 22-25, F
@annie616pop wow you're smart! Thanks for the advice. Yeah I get what you mean. Good luck with yours too!:)

It still sounds like security you want. You get some comfort without worrying about food, rent, and other needs.

Life has a way of knocking you down and taking away what you have. Ive been there more than once. You get back up and establish yourself again. An education, work experience, and savings help.
nonperv · 41-45, M
Remember there is more to life than money. Yes, money is important, but only so much is needed.

I'm paid alot less than what I earned before, but my life is better after leaving that work. What is the value of that money, if earning it makes you miserable? Seek balance.

Princess very glad nothing is wrong and everything is good with you! I am very good thanks! I am down at the beach again and will for a few days. Plenty of sunny warm weather with enjoying the ocean and the beach nothing better. Any trips plan for you?
Itsprincess · 22-25, F
@annie oh okay so I should choose a mixture between the two. And what im passionate about could just be a hobby. Thanks:) wow I could only dream of being as smart and talented as you😂 I can kinda sing and dance too but I'm not the best l:)
cameron · 26-30, M
ah cool I'm doing maths, further maths and IT. you could probably just straight up do a sociology degree if you're good at it, business degrees could be good if you're good at that too, you can earn a lot with that
Jon2403 · 61-69, M
what are you interested in? if you like a high paying job you will have too move over here too America. A lot of your country men or women come over here because they pay more over here
GoodoldBob · 61-69, M
Accounting is keeping financial records for people and businesses. It is not glamourous but the pay is good and there is always a huge demand, especially if yu specialize in taxation
nonperv · 41-45, M
@annie616pop Balance in all things.

I lean towards pragmatic choices. Basic needs and good choices are a foundation to establish a good life. After that, passion is viable.
Itsprincess · 22-25, F
@jon2403 I wouldn't be killing others directly. But indirectly yes. It sickens me. I'd rather be poor for the rest of my life than help in the military service
Jon2403 · 61-69, M
when others are studying you will be doing something while others coming out of college just hoping too get a job for what they got a degree in
xxxMickeyMouse22xxx · 22-25, M
My advise is to look for a job within IT as that is what pays good theses days. Your options are a good paid job in London and possible transfers to America.
tonykaye · 61-69, M
Why not skip university and go for an apprenticeship avoid uni fees and earn while you learn plus a good company will fund your further education
Jon2403 · 61-69, M
some over here go into the service after high school and after go to college when deciding on what they like too study. Military service.
GoodoldBob · 61-69, M
There is always good money in accounting. Lawyers make out well too. Architecture and engineering are the next tier I would say

Try to find something you won't hate doing every day. I won't say do what you love because that doesn't always pay off. I like to solve complex problems by improving a design. Thus I got into engineering.
