Why or why not?

If so what is it?

No. I don't believe in absolutes. There are always exceptions.
@mar3sword: "There are 2 things in life that are infinite, the Universe and the stupidity of people and I'm not so sure about the Universe." Albert Einstein

@softspokenman: There you go...people are stupid. I concur. Even the best of people are stupid (or do stupid things) at times.
@Carissimi: You have changed the wording. Faced with saving my child and a stranger I will save my child first. But if the only way to save my child is by taking a innocent life... That is different. But regardless of whether or not I am personally strong enough to make that decision if faced with that scenario. I know that it is the right decision.

@Greenbare: But the things I have mentioned are pretty objectively bad in excess. Then again most things are bad in excess.
@mar3sword: But what about speaking life into my friends life, my brothers life, my wife's, my children's?
WHO decides what is/isn't moral?
@mar3sword: Most of my adult life I have searched for the/a simple Truth by questioning and reading about others. (If you cant explain it simply then you don't understand it yourself" ~ A. Einstein).
I (*YOU*) are The most important thing in this life. Without me (*) there is nothing, no self awareness, no love or hate, no good or evil, nothing exists without me (*). I (*)need gratification to exist. As a human I (*) have needs, (Hierarchy of Needs ~ Abraham Maslow). I also receive gratification by helping others ("The reason why we are here is to help others." The Dali Lama) I (YOU) determine how I (*) live my (*)life. (perhaps I don't understand it myself ?)
@mar3sword: Comments ?
@softspokenman: Well put, admiral sources, bravo! From an individual perspective yes. Also from speaking as humanity as a whole. I actually agree with you completely with one exception, I believe good and evil exist without humans. I believe in a moral code that is outside of time.

So to be a good man you live to fulfill your needs while experiencing personal gratification by helping others?

From what you are saying the question of personal or absolute morality ties into the purpose of life... This is getting complicated.

I believe there are gray areas in some aspects but in others there is right and wrong ...when it's obvious
So what is an example of an absolute right and wrong?

I have one code basically. Do what you will but harm none (within reason).

Yes. Google Chief Tecumseh's poem. 😁 It sits over my desk at school.
@Yulianna: Again, depends what line of thought you follow. 1 surgeon could save hundreds of lives so utilitarian thought would say he is more valuable. But what if the surgeon was single and the 10 philosophers had families? The whole world is so complex these sorts of decisions are incredibly difficult. Unfortunately there are people who have to make such decisions on the regular, military officers and the like.

In regard to your last, always save the poet, it is really just making the world better by taking out the trash... ;) Just kidding, sort of, but you get me...
Yulianna · 22-25, F
@mar3sword: well, you say unfortunately, but really i think it is fortunate that people will go into politics, military and be prepared to make hard decisions based on evidence, intelligence, and objectives... imagine if we had to vote these every time, world would be overrun by terrorists.
@Yulianna: Ah yes, it is very fortunate there are such people. The unfortunate part I was referring to is the crushing weight they must bare on having to weigh such moral dilemmas on the regular and that such decisions have to be made.

No, I believe that a person should try to be as good as a person as they can be, but that life is not black and white and there are things that dwell in the grey areas.

TheConstantGardener · 56-60, M
Yes but it's a very limited one.
TheConstantGardener · 56-60, M
@mar3sword: It's one that protects the right of vulnerable people and stops exploitation.
@TheConstantGardener: So your absolute moral code would say that the strong are duty called to protect and care for the weak?
TheConstantGardener · 56-60, M
@mar3sword: Not necessarily the strong. It is the responsibility of everyone in society to uphold those rights.
