Is it selfish for one to not want to celebrate their own birthday?

Let's say someone's family and friends want to do something special for that person's birthday and get them gifts but they don't want to do anything nor do they want any gifts so they tell them not to do anything for them. Would you consider that selfish?

If anything I think it's selfish of others to force someone into a birthday celebration they don't want.

Thank you.

[c=#BF0080]I have never heard anyone describe that the same as I would and do. I go through it every year. Last year I was on a family vacation and specifically as usual asked my family to not do anything. They picked up a cake and sent my kids and nephew to con me into going upstairs. I told the kids they could go upstairs and share my piece. I stayed in my room on my bday, all night to avoid it and any other bday attention. I'm done thinking it's selfish to do what others want me to do on my bday. [/c]

Its not selfish but if people want to make the effort I'd personally let them. People have good intentions and mean well, even if it is a pain in the ass for oneself. lol.

[c=#7700B2]No. But it sounds like there is probably more going on regarding family dynamics and relationships with friends than just this birthday?[/c]

Not really. It's really just this person and them not liking themselves to where they feel they don't deserve to have their birthday celebrated or any gifts.

Not to me but I hate my birthday too and I use the excuse that I don't want to celebrate cuz of all the bad stuff that has happened to me around my birthday, even tho I don't care

It all depends on the individual and what they want according to themselves. My sister's birthday was last week and she always just wants best wishes and nothing more.

I don't really care for it anymore...I mean, I like celebrating it on my own...but I don't like making an event out of it.

It's not a selfish decision. If they really want to wish good for us then they should respect our feeling and leave us alone

not at all... I don't like to celebrate my birthday and if it is not a surprise, I will not let anybody celebrate my birthday as well

Haha that's true, mom did do all the work. Babies don't do a damn thing to help the process when they're born.
if you get cash or gift cards, you can send them my way. LOL
