To what extent do you believe those with significant wealth and power are held to the standard of law the rest of us are held to?

They get away with all kinds of things because of who they know and who they pay. They steal millions from people and serve little to no time, but a young man out of poverty will rot in a jail cell for decades for a pot conviction.

I look at the bail or bond a wealthy person can afford and say not at all. If you can kill someone and be walking around free because you have the money to post bond---or receive the option of bail in the first place, rather than automatic remand---that's an advantage over poorer people. Moreover, the better counsel you can afford, the shorter sentence if you're found guilty. And the less likely you are to be found guilty. And where it applies, the death penalty is likely to be off the table completely. It's an entirely different ballgame, so to speak.

Wealth and power can definitely influence the outcome of laws as they are applied. Access to counsel, experts, etc. are all easier with funds to pay, as is the quality of expert that can be retained. Contrast that with a public defender who is overworked, underpaid, and doesn't take the same level of interest, and who does not have the same access to additional resources, and the outcome will be different than for the highly skilled counsel. Public defenders may tend to encourage a plea deal whereas someone highly skilled may even be able to prevent charges being filed in the first place.
To the depth of their wallets, my friend. They are held to a different standard of law. It is obvious and unsettling.

@DanielChristensen: it was a guess, if you have money you can get good defense like OJ.

Not a big percentage at all. Money influences things, I imagine.

Yes. I often feel like the government in any particular area is the criminal organization that has gained the most legitimacy through effective distillations of propaganda and force.
