I used to hop between Tucson and San Antonio, Texas a lot. Hitch hiking was a lot more comfortable, but it could get weird sometimes. Trains were dangerous too because 'railroad bulls' would beat the crap out of you if the caught you. Nobody would make an issue out of some bruised up hobo. My first train was in Arkansas when I was 15 years old, I took into Oklahoma, and it was going way too fast when I jumped off, and I learned a painful lesson. I didn't hop again until I was in my late twenties.
