Why would anyone need to know who [b]my[/b] "friends" are in the first place?

Personally, I question the person who feels they should be privy to that sort of stuff.

I don't keep mine hidden but I'd imagine people worry about being judged? Like.. some men have an easier time talking to women than other guys, so most of their friends are women. To someone who doesn't know the user, they'd see the friends list and would assume they're really flirty or whatever.
