Guess what brought the Internet down yesterday!

Low level web devices such as DVRs and baby monitors and other low level devices were infested by a virus to perform a DDOS attack at DYN a site that acts as an address book for the major companies that were attacked yesterday..

It wasn't a an attack by another country ie China or Russia. They are investigating the source of the attack as in who infected all of these low level devices with very weak passwords.

As you know, this has been predicted for a while. the internet of things is a rich playground for hackers. God help us when toasters are online.

@Pfuzylogic: good point. I seem to recall a DDOS attack some years ago in the top tier domain name servers. But i don;t remember the details.

But yeah, this is the first attack of this kind that moved up so high if memory serves.

@HoraceGreenley: it actually seemed very innocuous compared to the damage it could have done. Of course it is hard to measure the amount of commerce that was stopped.

@Pfuzylogic: True. But it is scary to contemplate. And I'm still worried about the US dept. of Commerce turning over the domain registry to ICANN. I'm waiting to see if there will be negative consequences.

sounds like a perfectly disguised attack by a highly sophisticated party... I wouldn't rule out sovereign involvement..

@onestarrynight Very true, if you don't know the source, all things are possible. I suspect these devices were a distraction for something else.

@faefairy

The Denial of Service attacks were a slick method of flooding the central point of addressing Web sites.

I would be curious if there was another significance or memorial to someone with them. Hackers are known to tie their attacks with other rembrances!

@faefairy: That is very true; he had been missing!
Whats a ddos at dyn?

@TryingtoLava
DDOS or "nuke" is a way to flood a web with TCP/IP packets that are empty. They have been around awhile. DYN is a "Router" to different main Internet companies. Just an easy central point to flood everyone.

@Coolboy86 Would you have ever imagined that to be a source to bring the Internet down ?
