What are your thoughts on American police officers?

They do a good job.

They're in a terrible mess, if they defend themselves against people with guns they have good chance of being charged with murder. Recently a lady cop was charged with murder for shooting a guy hopped up on pcp who was reaching into his truck. I can't imagine anyone waiting to see if he's going to shoot them. He was told to keep his hands up.

I think there are good and bad and the media loves to try to crucify them for doing their jobs and reporting things even before investigations take place, which shows no respect for them or the tough choices they have to make. Not all police officers are innocent but the majority of them that find their way in the news are left with no choice but to respond the way they do. I also think a lot of complainers would see what it was like if they'd just uniform up and stop complaining, but mostly I think they are human beings which as a whole we tend to dehumanize them.

The Law Enforcement culture needs to change back to "Protect and Serve".

Some good, some bad, its a hard job I wouldnt want.

The more thugs and criminals they kill the better. Keeps the animals in line.

From a vantage point outside the US and only based on what we see in the media, they don't look great to be honest.
But I'm sure that's only because bad things always get the media's attention.

Some are very good people, and go into law enforcement for the noblest of reasons. My brother's a patrolman and I remember when he joined the force. He's a kind man, with a strong sense of right and wrong, always been a "straight arrow". But they literally see humanity at its very worst, and even the best become cynical to some extent. So it's even worse when people join who already have prejudices, or need to overpower others, because they take that with them on the job.

And what we're hearing about lately isn't new; police have been killing civilians, often in black and Latino neighborhoods, since the very beginning, but only recently have there been videocameras and cellphone cameras to provide irrefutable proof. One of the reasons for the Rodney King riots in 1992 wasn't only because of the original beating, that kind of thing had gone on all the time. But for the first time people on the outside could see for themselves, and the Simi Valley jury [i]still[/i] acquitted the police officers, which told the community, "Yes, we have now seen that this is happening. [b]We don't care[/b]."

We give them a gun and a high-speed pursuit vehicle as tools ... to handle our problems with drugs, domestic abuse, mental illness, and other social maladies.

When all you have is a hammer ...

Most of the one's I've conversed with and observed have been very cool and nice but there are clearly way too many bad cops and by and large I don't trust the LAPD.
