Why Americans (ok, some) think Catholics aren't Christians? [Spirituality & Religion]

They're the very pillar of Christianity.
Angelly · F
I can share my experience. I was raised in a very devout Catholic family(I am non-religious). The elders always refer to themselves as CATHOLICS,not Christians. If any family member is not baptized or married in the Catholic Church, is not "really" married. If you belong to a Christian Church, then you are not a follower of the "true" religion. I think that way of thinking is common amongst congregates😖

Oh, I see. From my experience being Catholic is like being a New-Yorker, you're still American(=Christian)
Angelly · F
Yeah, but the elders in my family don't make that correlation😒
but Catholics themselves do not refer to themselves as Christians but as Catholics
No. You missed my point completely. @MrMarcus:
@MrMarcus: Jesus wasn't created by God. Where are you getting all this? The Trinity has always existed. Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Jesus wasn't created by anyone. The Bible says Hes always existed. Our minds can't understand that.

@GraceFromEP: I'm not stating what I personally believe in, I'm stating what JW's believe.

Here. These are their explanations on the topic

Most other Christian religions have a different system of leadership.
The Roman's politicized the early Christian church and mixed in paganism with early Christianity thus making it more palpable for the local constituency. This is how the 'Catholic church' came about. Catholicism is nothing like early Christianity, but it 'is' a sect of Christianity. Fitting for a religion with 100 thousands sects.

@JimboSaturn: Oh my. I would think that if you accept Jesus Christ as your Savior, you're a Christian
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
yes I'm (well was) Catholic and I certainly considered myself Christian lol @SimplyTracie:
Explain why they are the very pillar of Christianity, over others.

Just because they represent most of Christians population in the world, and they have been the first Christian Church to ever exist, or at least that we know of.
Not so, but I'm not going to debate. To each their own. @MrMarcus:

I never understood why they think that. I'm American, I'm Christian, and think Catholics are too.
LoveChild · 26-30, F
It's weird that some people think it's a different religion. It most definitely isn't.
SW-User
because many people don't really bother to get to the bottom of historical facts, what words really mean, figuring out what the group they consider themselves part of really think, nor even what the group they consider to be outsiders thinks. a consequence of oversimplification, I think.

The USA was largely founded by Protestants, so it makes sense that theyd feel some animosity towards catholicism I guess.
SW-User
Might have something to do with The Reformation, and if so not just Americans.
SweetMae · 70-79, F
I am an American and I don't think that.

That was a broad generalization, I just edited the post
Because some people who call themselves "Christians" are ignorant. If there's a way to exclude somebody they're going to find it. If you don't worship in exactly the same way they do, you're wrong. The last time I wasted arguing with someone who said that, I asked them if they understood from whence Protestantism came.

"Of course," she said, "our church is Protestant."
"Sooo," I continued, "Your church was established in protest against whom ?"
"Against the Catholics, I guess," she admitted.
"Wouldn't that suggest that the Catholic church existed first ?" I pressed.
