The vote to keep guns out of mentally disturbed people just got shot down

Pun not intended. Cause god forbid we let nuts not buy rifles or maybe make it more controlled. After all we elected one president.

*Waits for nuts to rage at me*

I think you need to inject a little truth here, you see the NRA, the American Civil Liberty Union, and disability rights activist weighing in on the same side of the issue you might want to look if the issue is really what people are saying it is.

I am not comfortable with the social security office being an arm of the FBI in determining who is able to have a certain right. The ACLU thinks the bill does not have enough checks and balances so as not to be improperly applied. The rule also perpetuates the stigma that people with mental illness are behind gun violence in America. In reality, studies show people with mental illness are more likely to be victims, not perpetrators, of violence, and that very few violent acts — about 3 to 5 percent — are carried out by those with serious mental illness and those don't all involve guns.

There are a lot of impediments mostly in the attitudes of people about the mentally ill that keep people from seeking help they need for their conditions this just adds to the list without providing a clear benefit.
which bill? There are already laws in place for people with any form of mental history.

That bill was a terrible one that was changed last minute with even more broad drawbacks. When even the dems are rejecting Obamas bs that should tell you something.

Yes because that would be crazy ....effing guns are more important then common sense
No surprise. A few years back the NRA funded a campaign to kill a bill that would have banned people on terror watch lists from purchasing guns. So next time you hear about a terrorist walking into a gun store and buying up an armoury worth of weapons and ammo you know who to thank.
@katielass: I suggest you familiarize yourself with the basic concept of law in the US and most of the western world. You cannot hand out punishments to people based on suspicion without charge or trial. This goes back to 16th century England for bloody sake. There are several cases proven where some of these people just have the misfortune of sharing a name with a criminal.
@katielass: Look into it. The only difference if you buy a gun or a suspected terrorist buys a gun is if someone on the watch list buys one the FBI gets a notification..so essentially the FBI gets an email. But nothing prevents the sale.

I didn't say people are being punished without being charged and convicted. IDK, we may both be saying the same thing but in different ways. IDC really. The fact remains, no additional law that has ever been proposed would have prevented any incident or would prevent an incident that COULD occur. Reason being, criminals and terrorists don't give a rat's ass about the law. They can easily buy a gun off the street. The only people that would be inconvenienced at all are law abiding citizens. When the democrats start working on ways to get the already illegal guns out of the hands of those who are in gangs and/or killing each other on a daily basis in our inner cities, I'll believe they actually care. Until then, all they are trying to do is make it more difficult on law abiding people and not one bit harder on the criminals. And frankly, that adds up to bullshit.

No rage babe, just facts coupled with plain old common sense. For all the effort by the left to restrict the purchase of guns there has not been even one that would have prevented ANY incident we have witnessed. It's not difficult to see that so why the continued effort. It can only be interpreted as an effort to separate law aiding citizens from their Supreme Court affirmed Second amendment right. Anyone concerned about the loss of innocent lives need only look to the cities where shootings and killings are more common than not. Doesn't take a lot of thought to see what's going on here, just thought.

There's a lot of money to be made from selling guns. Greed rules. End of story.

Well it depends on the definition of mentally disturbed. Those on antidepressants or those in the cookoo house? I don't think mentally disturbed is the term they used.
Which bill? ... wasn't aware they were voting on anything the last few days
LOL ! This is why I think the gun nuts are full of baloney about caring about mass shootings. Even moderate control, to keep guns out of the hands of people with mental problems (and those on terrorist watch lists) is too much for them. I think they're afraid their loved ones might be assessed as mentally ill or might turn up as domestic terrorists---then to whom would they leave their arsenals ? 🤔
The sad thing is is even the "gun nuts" like the NRA membership support such controls but they are not the members that count. Is is Colt, Remington, etc that call the shots. They get 1000 votes for every single vote the regular members do. Not literally but because of where the money is coming from it amounts to the same thing.
