Did you know the separation of church and state is not in the constitution

It was first pinned by jefferson in his time as president
Alan47 · 56-60, M
Yes and no. While it may not be worded exactly as such in the Constitution, formal US legal culture explicitly interprets the 1st amendment to have that effect, and it was the expressed intent of the founders for it to be so.

@sassygirl15: "God's word" is rather fickle. I have to ask the various kinds of christians which version of things they ascribe to. You might not have noticed but there are all kinds of christians out there who have very different beliefs.

@GoldenWorm: yes there are because not all Christian are true Christian
GoldenWorm · 51-55, M
@sassygirl15: Look up the logical fallacy of "no true scottsman." And goodnight.
"church IN state" ? What ?????????????

"jeffrson" ?

Time to go back to school. 👎

@sassygirl15: So they did. History is always more complex and rich than seems to be remembered.

@Oconnor: my ancestors came here from Germany and Switzerland to escape persecution and that has left a very lasting impact. Because of that we do believe in separation in church and state.

@sassygirl15: One, I'm not picking a fight here. Two, I completely understand religious persecution and the fact many came to escape it. However, that's not what the original settlers had in mind when they arrived in the 16th and 17th centuries. That it has become about full separation of church and state I understand, but that was not the intended ideal of Jefferson.
Church and State

It's still not separate and will never be

Nor does it mean "keep religion out of politics." I was intended to prevent the federal government from establishing and forcing the worship of a specific state religion. That's it. Government was full of religion and still is.

Always has been

@sassygirl15: Yup. At the risk of offending some, Sharia law isn't so terribly different from basing and entire legal system on Judeo-Christian theology, practice and morality. We legislate on the basis of Biblical teaching. That is religion in politics.

Many have been elected because of their religion.
KeasbeyNights · 31-35, M
Not explicitly in as many words, merely an interpretation of the First Amendment.
Mountainlady16 · 22-25, F
Right but the 1st protect religious freedom.

No no.. tell me more.. Please edumacate me
Mountainlady16 · 22-25, F
I corrected it
GoldenWorm · 51-55, M
Go read the Federalist Papers. The founders used the most extreme language they could find to ensure State and Church were not commingled in any way at all. The SOCAS clause was and is clear that a wall is required.
johnny253 · 70-79, M
What's the SOCAS clause??
GoldenWorm · 51-55, M
@johnny253: separation of church and state
johnny253 · 70-79, M
@GoldenWorm: Thanks
