The Story of Dolly

This is the story of Dolly the Schnauzer and how she came to live with me.

It was 2010 and I was searching desperately in the shelters for a Schnauzer and having no luck. Having exhausted my search by visiting every shelter within driving distance and calling many beyond that, just in case, I began searching rescue organizations. Luckily one day I saw a picture of the cutest little Schnauzer on the web page of a local Schnauzer Rescue organization. I called the number immediately and was disappointed to learn that it had been a mistake to post her picture. She was deemed unadoptable. Inquiring as to why she was unadoptable, I learned she had been horribly abused, having survived at attempt by some kids to cut her right ear off. My eyes welled with tears as I could not even imagine what that poor little dog must have been thinking.

As the lady and I spoke she started asking questions and then suddenly she said ok I'm not making any promises but if you are really interested you can come meet her and we'll take it from there. No promises, keep that in mind. Well, I was at her door within the hour.

She led me to her garage where she had wire cages set up but all were empty. The front of the garage was open and blocked with a series of connecting child gates. Obviously, this was set up for dogs in her care to play if it was raining. How nice. We sat in lawn chairs and talked a while and then she left to get the little Schnauzer. She brought her through a side door and when the little dog saw me she pulled her head out of her collar and jumped on my lap. We were both in shock but I think the lady was worried that she was going to attack me. Except she didn't. She sat in my lap like a perfect little lady and looked up at me as if to say please take me. I immediatey fell in love.

We continued to talk and observe the little dog's behavior. She clearly was quite affectionate and licked my chin and nose frequently. After deciding this was a miracle the lady said if I wanted her, I could have her. I did and paid her the organization;s fee and took her home. She became Dolly because she truly is a little doll.

Life was not always easy once Dolly came to live with me. Taking her for walks became something of a fiasco because if she saw people, children in particular, she froze and would plant her little butt on the sidewak and I'd have to pick her up and carry her home. Her little body shook uncontrollably. She also refused to go outside in the back yard unless I went out with her. This was a little inconvenient but I learned to be more patient because I was determined she would feel safe in her own home.

Over the past 6 years, Dolly has been the love of my life. She is still afraid of most people but can now take walks without freezing and she can even go outside by herself. She likes to go to PetSmart and shop for toys and is pretty good when I leave her to be groomed. She is the sweetest girl, follows me everywhere, and hubby says she waits by the door when I go out and of course is right there when I return. I am so glad I found her..

A lovely story. Poor Dolly to have been so ill treated ,it doesn't bear thinking about what horrors she was put through. I love happy endings and this is definitely one , she is very lucky to have you and to be given the love and protection that she deserves. She's very cute by the way .

This is such a beautiful story and I got teary eyed reading how she had been abused. I think it is just deplorable that people can be cruel to animals and your poor pup still feeling fear around people is heart rending knowing she has those memories.

I don't know which of you is the luckier one, it may be a tie. Just love that sweet pup up as you do and try to make each and every day for her nicer than the one before. I love the photo of her. She is gorgeous!

@Spankedjenny...Thank you so much for your kind words. She is a very loving little dog. I cannot imagine how anyone could abuse such a sweet creature but it happens all the time. I'm lucky to have her in my life, she gives so much joy.

Does Dolly eat unwholesome, dead stuff that she finds and then expects to get up close for a face lick?
katielass · F
No, she thinks she's too good to eat it, she just rolls over it and gets all stinky. My Red Heeler eats rabbits and birds and then wants to lick your face. gag...Especially not after hearing the crunch of their little bones.

I have to be on the lookout that next door's cat hasn't crimped one off outside our house because I know that Her Majesty will immediately eat it for all those extra tasty minerals and vitamins. Dolly is gorgeous, by the way!
